Phone connection

Featured Replies

I've connected my phone with no problems and all works fine, however once connected I can't use the phone at all, no internet and messaging on the phone.  I get a message on the phone saying emergency calls only.  It's stopping me connect to OBDeleven.  Have I set something up wrong?

You've probably connected in rSAP ('Premium') mode which essentially removes the SIM card from your phone. Reconfigure in 'Handsfree' mode and see if that fixes it.

Sounds like that could be it.  What's the difference between the two?

There are numerous different profiles that bluetooth can use, in this instance, you're interested in HFP and rSAP.

The simplest is 'Handsfree' BT modules, these let the mobile phone do all the work but use the car for the audio. This can mean reduced signal as the mobile phone is inside a big metal box (your car) or increased phone battery use.

So called 'Premium' BT modules such as the one you currently have use rSAP to effectively remove the SIM card from your mobile phone and turn the car into a phone instead. This means there is a separate antenna on the roof and should help get better signal. The down side is that while your mobile is connected using rSAP, it can't connect to mobile networks for phone, text and data services because the SIM card has been effectively removed. The very latest BT modules can get round this limitation by creating a WiFi hotspot for your mobile to connect to for data services.

Depending which BT module is installed, it'll either support 'Handsfree', 'Premium' or both!

At the moment, you're connected in 'Premium' mode, you might be able to swap to 'Handsfree' using the MFD/maxidot assuming your BT module supports it.

The other downside to rSAP is that calls and texts received while connected to the car are not synchronised with your phone after it disconnects, they stay on the car.

Found if I switch off allowing sim access in the bluetooth profile for the car connection is the compromise.  I don't use the phone a lot so signal strength doesn't really bother me.  Actually when it's the Mrs phoning lack of signal is a bonus..
