Stop start gremlin

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have an octavia 1.6 diesel and a couple of times my car has restarted the engine when it's in stop start. My feet were on the foot well floor and my hands weren't near any controls. Handbrake was on and gears in neutral. Also sometimes the stop start doesn't work when the car becomes stationary and the A in the circle button isn't lit up. Anybody else had experience of this.

The engine will restart if the battery state of charge gets too low e.g. if the air con is working or there is a heavy electrical load such as lights, heated rear window, etc.

If stop/start doesn't work when you stop that's usually an indication that the battery state of charge is too low.

I've experienced both of these situations, and IMHO they are both 100% normal - it's the battery management system making sure the battery state of charge doesn't get too low.

Fab, thanks for the information. When I bought the car from the dealership the battery was flat, probably from being stood on the forecourt for ages.

That sounds normal. Feet off pedals and in neutral - the engine will start if the battery gets too low. If the battery is charged sufficiently, the engine will stop.

Normal. If I park up, put it into park, the engine stops but because of the air con will start up after awhile, maybe for a minute or so then stop. Keeps repeating.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. It's good to know that the car is OK.

I've gotten into the habit of turning it off as soon as I start the car. It's extra annoying with an automatic as you can't use the clutch to start the engine before pulling away. There's always this lurching delay when I lift my foot off the brake.

Turning the steering wheel will start the engine.

On my Bolero if you press the Car button then press on the Ainfo icon on the screen, down the bottom of the next screen it tells you the restart reason.

I've seen it say Manually Requested or something along those lines after i've pressed the clutch to restart the engine, I'd imagine it would say something else if it restarted itself without you doing anything.
