Tyre advice for the Scout please

Featured Replies

When I bought the Scout some 16 months ago I was pleased that it came with a proper spare tyre in the boot which appeared to be brand new.

As the two front tyres are getting a bit worn I've decded to replace them.

Checking all the tyres the ones fitted are all 225/50 R17 but some are "94W" while others are "96W".

The ones offered by our local dealer are "96W".

Is it OK having a mix?

More worryngly I thought I'd check what type the spare is....

It looks brand spanking new but it says "205/R65 16" on it.

Surely this is the wrong size or am I missing something?

Unfortunately I think it's too long now to go back to the dealer to query this but, obviously, I need to get the correct spare.

Any advice would be gratefully received please.

That size spare will be fine for emergency use, as in no more than 50 MPH and only to the nearest repair shop.

Sorry to be a bit thick but are "205/R65 16" tyres the same outer diameter as "225/50 R17" then?

Cheers for that!

So just over 1/2" different but why not supply the same size spare as those fitted to the vehicle?

I'm pretty sure that, on every other car I've ever owned (40+) the spare tyre was always the same size as those on the car!

The Spare wheel / tyre is fitted with a tyre near enough to fit cars with various tyre sizes, they are not fitting / stocking them just for a Scout and their tyre size.

All seems rather odd to me as my local tyre dealer has plenty of stock of 225/50 ones so why couldn't Skoda supply one as a spare?

What is the significance of the 94W and 96W and is it OK to mix them?

The 225 tyre won't fit under the boot floor without raising it slightly. The 205 is the only one that will fit properly in the boot.. Some people put the 225 in there anyway.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_code#Load_index 94 is good for a load of 670 kg and 96 for 710 kg. I wouldn't have thought it would matter which, but the manual should say which to use.

You can buy tyres with higher load ratings, (or higher speed ratings) than were originally fitted without any problems

The scout has a haldex differential in its 4x4 system, shouldn’t really run tyres with different circumferences for long period (tread depths varying over 2.5-3mm).  If you have been, then you ought to get haldex inspected (might be due a fluid change anyway).  So it’s important to periodically front-back swap tyres on 4x4 to even out wear.

Dont just buy 2 tyres if other 2 have tread depth more than 3mm different from new ones.  Sorry but choosing the 4x4 comes with extra maintenance and replacement parts.

I've just checked and the haldex oil was changed back in February this year.

As I've got a mix of tyre types on the car I think I'll buy a complete set of the

96W ones so then I can be sure going forward. Many thanks everybody for the advice.
