Help me buy a car?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a decent spec Octavia estate MK3. I have about 8k -10k deposit and looking to finance a bit on top. My wife is taking lessons so a vrs is unfortunately out of the picture. Interior toys are my biggest turn on car wise the more the better.

Must haves are:

Colour maxidot

Nav...bigger the better

Armrest

Auto lights wipers

Cruise

Parking sensors

Preferred options

Leather

Panoramic roof

Adaptive cruise

Lane assistance

City braking

DSG

I've been to a dealer and tried to negotiate a bit on a car we liked but it was a fail and they refused to budge on price.

I have a good credit rating but have never financed a car, we tend to buy them cash and run them into the ground.

I will be looking to modify it a bit and don't want limited mileage so PCP type deals are not for me.

We are struggling to find an Octavia with all the options we would like and out local dealers are part of a small southwest group with limited stock do it may be a long wait. What models should we be looking at to maximise chances of best options, sel or elegance I'm guessing?

Would you think a bank loan on top of our deposit would mean the dealer may negotiate screen price on say £14-16k? If so what would you expect off screen price for a cash sale.

Dealers get some financial incentive for doing finance deals so they are always happy to set you up with one.

Have you tried looking for a car through web sites such as carwow?

I can't really advise on which model to look at since I've only really looked at vRS, but the Sportline could be a decent halfway house.

Definitely check out CarWow, you can get very good discounts on RRP and certainly go the PCP route, especially since there is an extra £1000 discount currently available (only until 17th June).  There are a few threads on here with regards to taking out PCP, the general consensus is to call VW finance soon after delivery and ask to cancel and clear the outstanding finance; you get to keep the deposit contribution, servicing etc.

Dealers don’t want to do “cash deals” anymore. The car is merely a way of selling finance, service plans etc etc, which is where they make their money.

I had the same issue buying my car. One dealer wouldn’t budge an inch on price and my offer to pay in full that day was irrelevant to them for any discount.

In the end I bought an approved used 3 year old Octavia on pcp. The dealer was  keen as anything to sell on pcp, agreed to do a free a service and brake fluid change and knocked another £500 off when I started to walk out (I decided I’d got as good a deal as they would do at that point !)

I then settled the pcp in full the following month.

If you can wait a few weeks (until at least mid Sept) then you might be lucky with a nearly new one.

Many dealer’s change their demonstrators just after registration plate change, and I think the mark4 version is due (but exact launch date is vague), when this hits the market there will be a clear out of current model on the Skoda staff fleets.   Many of these also have lots of options fitted.

An SE-L would tick all of your must have boxes but it’s hard to find them with good options on, the ones you have listed include the most expensive options that can be installed. It would help to list if you are buying new or used and what amount you want to finance to see what budget you are working with, then recommendations can begin in earnest. I would recommend an L&K spec car as one of them is more likely to have all of the options that you desire. Lane assist is a strange one as the vRS has it as standard but the SE-L does not.

I think 10k limit deposit 6k limit finance. The safety features would help my wife's confidence as a new driver so I'm hoping to get as many as I can.

Im a bit anti new car(AKA tight) , I would much rather get a  better deal on a lowish mileage used one with better options than a poverty spec new.

So £16k total. Are you wanting an estate or hatch, diesel or petrol? I would say that £16k puts you in a nice FL SE-L or a very nice PFL L&K, maybe an FL one if you are lucky. For adaptive cruise, look for 2 stalks on the left of the steering wheel and for lane assist look for the trapezium shaped camera cutout on the top of the screen.

Yes 16 total, maybe a bit more if it was option rich. Definitely estate, my staffy is my third child and more often than not my preferred one! She's a big girl and needs the room.

One like this would fit most of what you want

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201904056665774

This one has active cruise, lane assist, DSG, Park Pilot (self park), colour Maxidot, half leather/alcantara, nav, nice wheels and low mileage plus the basics (auto lights, armrest etc) also has powered drivers seat and key memory and CANTON sound system. 2 things it doesn’t have that are a shame are the Columbus nav, it only has the Amundsen and as it’s a MIB1, a screen upgrade isn’t possible without a new radio to match and as it has CANTON you would need an amp to match the MIB2 radio if you wanted to upgrade so you would be stuck with the 5.8 inch screen or else spend many £££. It also doesn’t have the pan roof but that’s a very rare option. It’s also under your budget which is good :) if you wanted a back up camera they are under £20 to DIY and you can code lots of features like High Beam Assist etc also Traffic Sign Recognition but it won’t be perfect, it won’t fuse with the nav data so it’ll bring up a warning and it’ll only work with the camera. Still a nice car though 😁

We are looking at one with a beige interior. It's not something I'd choose but it has great options. It had this which I think is the bigger screen?

If I could go to the glossy 9" from this I think I'd live with beige

Can you link the car here, I can advise on the radio from there. I found lots of L&K’s with the options you want with MIB2 radios already for your budget, I just posted that one as it’s under budget. If you have the 6.5 inch screen you can plug and play the 8 inch one and the FL gloss climate panel too (with some coding, actually you can make that work on any Octy 3) but it needs to be a MIB2. If you want the 9.2 inch screen you will need a MIB2.5 Columbus for that, like mine :)
