What are the odds?

Featured Replies

I've been following this site for a few months. I was all set to buy a Karoq and then noticed all the issues online with the 1.5 engine in various brands. I was going to buy one of the 1.5 Karoq with a DSG. Also was leaning a bit towards a T-roc as well, but a little more room in the Karoq and the shiny bits on the dash of the T-roc would just irritate me. It really seems that the majority of issues have been with the manual models with only a few zapping the DSG vehicles. Can anybody even "guess" what the odds are of getting a dud? I was also waiting to see if the VW dealer gets in a T-cross with DSG to demo......I was told probably in the next month or two.....but that seems to be what all dealers say.

There are plenty of 1.5 TSI DSG Karoq's out there on dealer forecourts. Go drive a couple and get a feel for the car.

I drove a 1.0 a couple of months ago.....that's all they had. I liked it, but just wanted a little more ooomph. The dealership didn't fill me with awe. The first time we went in they just ignored us. Went back a few days later and got a short test drive. At least the VW dealership was very professionally run.....which of course might not make a diddle of difference.

Thanks....may just give it a try. But, that wasn't what I was asking in the original post. I already like the car and would have bought one until I did some research and noticed the 1.5 issues. I was wondering what the odds were of getting a dud car......likely not something someone outside of Skoda admin can answer, but I thought what the hell....might as well ask the impossible question.  Since I was after a DSG I figured the odds where much better than with the manual.

If you're thinking of taking a test drive, bear in mind that it took two months before I realised that there was something seriously wrong with mine. And yes, I took a test drive.

The thing with forums is that there are more posts when there are problems  than when there are not. I guess the VAG group are the only ones who have the complete data ratio on good v problem 1.5 TSi models. Lets hope they get more consistency for the 1.5 performance across the complete VAG range that use this engine with SW and or HW fixes for all model  and transmission years.

I have the 1.5 TSi Karoq with DSG  ( my 3rd Skoda with DSG albeit the 1st two were Octavia 1.6 diesels) and have done about 7000 miles since last August without a single hiccup during that time. I wouldn't have any other gearbox, and the combination of a petrol engine with DSG is, to my mind, perfect. I'm averaging 40mpg on every journey, even more on longer trips, which although less than the 50-55 I achieved with the diesel Octavia's, is still OK in my book as I'm appearing not to spend any more on my monthly fuel bills due to the price differentials !

What odds would deter you from buying?

5%? 50%?

The 1.5 TSI in any guise is not a good buy at the moment, there are plenty of other equally good engines out there without recognised / unresolved issues. Why take the risk?

5% or above would be too much for me...but I don't think normal folks would have that info. Which other equally good engines would you recommend. I've certainly been looking a fair bit online.....I haven't really seen much that can compare. There are things that are semi-close (Peugeot 3008 etc)......But I won't spend more than £25-27K, so that knocks a bunch of things out. I still would like to test drive a T-cross since it fits the minimum of what I am after (easier entry/exit, room for golf clubs without putting seats down).

I agree. It's one thing to have faults develop after you have bought a car, that can happen with any car, and they can usually be fixed, but to have a manufacturer supplying cars fresh from the factory with inbuilt faults and then not having a satisfactory fix is totally unacceptable. I'm not touching one with a bargepole!
