Amsterdam

Featured Replies

Hi all, driving to Holland in the next couple of weeks, and we fancy a day trip to Amsterdam. Has anyone any experience of parking? Looking at it, it will probably be the P&R but I don't understand what I've read online so looking for any personal experiences!

Thanks in advance

+1 for park and ride or just getting to the nearest station from wherever you're staying.

we did that last summer from where we were staying and - if I remember correctly - the train ticket counted as your parking ticket.

(as in you get in to the car park okay, but need your train ticket to get out thru the barriers)

edit - actually found the car park again on google maps and it says "parking is free" and there are no barriers, so I'm getting confused with somewhere else

Amsterdam Public Transport

The last time we stayed in Amsterdam (IIRC late 2013) we bought an unlimited public transport ticket which lasted 3 or 4 days, which was brilliant for getting around on.  We stayed in the outskirts of Amsterdam, even then the tram stop was only approximately 5 minutes away from out hotel.

We've talked about doing a Lowlands Roadtrip, and if our previous experience was anything to go by, we'll just leave the car in the hotel car park and just use public transport.

Thanks all, we are staying at Center Parcs so need to drive in really as it's not that close to Amsterdam. P&R seems like the logical choice.

Public transport very good. Roads in Amsterdam aren't great for driving when you get into the touristy bits at the canals.

We used the trams to get around when we were there, they're a bit odd with a conductor in the middle in a booth.

I've worked in Amsterdam several times and although I always flew there, I don't think a car would be a good idea to take anywhere near the centre. The roads are simultaneously full of trams, cars, buses, bicycles and pedestrians, it's a sort of coordinated chaos. Trams are great as are the water taxis etc. Better to 'park and ride' then walk/tram/boat around imho

As a side note, one of our senior people was tasked with getting us a day looking around the Heineken brewery and failed! So I officially know a man who couldn't organise a pi$$-up in a brewery

On the plus side, you had a lucky escape based on everyone (myself included) I know who's not Dutch and has had a Heineken!

You write as though it is possible to buy alcoholic drinks in units of 'one'!!

Well, it is on a rondvaart.
