TDI VRS REMAP/TYRE QUERY

Featured Replies

Hello.. Firstly I'd like to apologise as I'm positive this question or similar will have come up multiple times on this forum, however, I can't find it.

I'm just looking for company names or names of people who can remap my MKIII TDI VRS in the North East or surrounding area?

As a side note as well, what tyres do you guys run? I'm noticing traction issues more often than not which could well be partially down to the tyres.

Thanks in advance!

I'll give them a look mate cheers. I think Shark would've been my main preference but as you say distance and money!

Heard some horror stories about some places round our end!

As an FYI, Shark got acquired by Racingline Performance which is now down in Milton Keynes. The main guy Ben is also based down there, and still excellent - service was brilliant too as always.

Thanks for that Ads230. I'm still keeping an open mind about Shark but if I like what Big Fish are about then for ease I'll probably stick with them!

There's a separate Tyre sub forum. Might be the best place to enquire. Scroll down from the model specific forums.

What was your VRS 184 putting out after the map? I've been given a rough figure of 220bhp and 450nm from Big fish who have been excellent so far in my communications with them, very helpful.

I was going to suggest BigFish but you're already on to them.

Another option is the more generic Revo remap and 'installed' by North East Auto Tech.  I've not had a remap from them but they look after our Golf GTI and they are superb:

I've had my Leon FR 184 PS TDI remapped by Revo and it was very good indeed.  I had the car for 3 years, remapped from near enough new and had no problems whatsoever.  I didn't have it dyno'd but speaking with Revo they had done enough testing to say that 230bhp/500Nm is about the norm for this engine.  Economy was improved by ~3-5% too, if that's of interest.

Having had a Revo map before I'd be very tempted to go with them again BUT...I'm back in the NE now and BigFish are only 10 mins away so I'd also speak with Jon and see what he also could offer.  They are very well regarded and not just for VW group cars; they have a good reputation in SAAB and Alfa circles too.

Tyre wise I always used GY Efficient Grip performance on my Leon FR and it had no issues with traction unless it was really wet.  Excellent grip and very good wear rate too.  I actually thought they were better than Eagle F1's.

I'm now using Michelin PS4 on my 280 and they are sublime (but a tad noisy on poor surfaces)

Had a few remaps by John @ Bigfish, all good 👍

Wow thanks for the information fellas. Plenty of food for thought there.

The Revo software looks expensive for the same outcome in terms of power and I'd assume due to the high regard BF is held in for reliability as well - unless I'm missing something?

I also noticed it has 214-233bhp as an expected outcome. What causes the variance here?

Fuel, state of the engine/turbo/ancillaries before the map and the fact the car might have left the factory with +/- bhp than the same model leaving the same production line (though these days it should be a pretty tight tolerance)

Another thumbs up for Big Fish from me! Had wife's A3 1.9 remapped 8 year's ago from 104 Bhp to around 135-140 with no side affects or problems & still going strong despite her best efforts....Had my 110 Bhp Yeti remapped late 2017 mainly to remove emissions "upgrade" to 186 Bhp & 310 lbs ft, goes very well & pulls my Eriba Puck L caravan effortlessly.

P.s the Yeti 110 was putting out 121 Bhp on BF rolling road as standard!

The Performance Centre in Sunderland are good - more BMW specialists, but they do a lot of VAG stuff and also an Authorised Revo dealer should you want their software.

I used a DTUK tuning box on my O3 with no issue, and they’re based in Stanley.

Shark always get great write ups too, and in the grand scheme of things, Mansfield isn’t too far away. They did my Mk2 FL vRS and it was fantastic.

I ran Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tyres on said vRS - always found them fantastic value for money.

Thanks everyone that's taken the time to answer my questions properly. Pretty confident going forward now what I'm going to do.. I'll change my mind 10 times before then anyway so.

I've read that the DTUK boxes tend to churn up some bad results with the 184 engine otherwise that would've probably be my preference - seen a few Leon owners complaining.

But yeah thanks again, much appreciated fellas!
