Removing a tuning box pre-remap

Recommended Posts

Getting a remap tomorrow so need t remove the tuning box.  Probably should have done it sooner to let things settle down but here we are less than 24 hrs before.

Is there anything beyond the usual code clearing that I should be aware of?  Plan to give it a blast on the way home tonight to clear out any cobwebs with the box removed.

Edit: 2.0 tdi 150 dsg for the lazy lot :tongueout:

Unlike a remap the tuning box just alters the signals going to and from the ECU rather than overwriting the map within it. Removing the box and its wiring loom will be straight forward.  If you remove it whilst the engine is still warm the connections will open easier with less chance of breaking their clips.

This I understand.  Was just wandering if the engine had settled into a rhythm and once disconnecting the box it throws a wobbler.  I guess only one way to find out.

This is a great tip!  Will go for a drive at lunch then remove it.

You can unset the learning within the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a while but will probably need to reset windows etc. Personally I wouldn't bother.

Which tuning box are you removing vs. which remap you having out of interest? Would be interested to hear how they compare!

When you get it remapped that will reset the learning. It will also probably clear the ECUs fault memory.

Other than unplug it there's really nothing else to be done.

Thanks all. Box is removed and am slightly impressed at how the stock tune is holding up. From my research of the box it doesn't add anything under 1500 revs so day to day driving up to 2-2500 you don't see much change. It's 2-2500 and up where the box really works.

@Liggythe box is a bluespark plus boost. Got it for a good deal and will be looking at getting what I paid back.

Map going on is a 'custom' tune from storm development. They did my mk2 1.9 and I was very happy with it for a couple of years and 45k.

I say 'custom' because it's one of their off the shelf maps but they tweak it when first loading on to match the car and any requests. I have no specific needs. Just a solid smooth map with no smoke. They recon 190hp and +110Nm. They are not much talked about on here as they usually deal in big power but they specialise in VAG tuning.

I'll get a Dyno if they have availablity (they are crazy busy at the mo. Only 2 of them full time and they had 5 cars on lifts with another 5 outside when I went to book in the other day).

I'll let you know how it goes.

Picked the car up yesterday.  So far only driven home then to work this morning.

Not as dramatic as the box around 2-2500 revs. After 3500 the box starts to tail off where the map keeps going and going and going.  The whole thing just builds power effortlessly.

Pickup is nicer both from standstill and cruising.  With the dsg gear changes feel smoother than both stock and with the box.  I found that the stock map would be hunting for a gear when going uphill where the remap provides that little extra so no need to drop a gear but smoother when it does.

I think my driving style will change again as the shove isn't as noticeable.  It just builds power and speed.  Got the final piece of the puzzle to get my dsg paddles working so when I've played with that and got more used to the map I'll come back with more.

ps.  the guys changed my number plate bulb which had gone a couple of weeks ago too!
