Random hazard lights

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've got a very annoying problem. The hazard lights randomly activate (as a single flash) while driving, but only when stationary, or maybe also at very low speeds when coming to a stop.

Doesn't happen every time. Also doesn't start happening as soon as I stop. Could happen halfway through waiting for a traffic light change.

Sometimes it flashes just once, other times they flash many times, but not at a regular interval (so not like turning on the hazards via the switch).

It seems to stop if I turn on and off the hazards via the switch when this issue starts, though as the issue is random I can't be certain this is having any effect.

Ideas?

Unplug the hazard switch and see if it still happens?

Give the switch the good news, they get so little use it could have sticky contacts or some conductive dusty gunk across them.

2nd suggestion, - refrain from driving when stationary, you are an adult with a driving license and car now, you no longer have to pretend making revving engine noises :D

Anyone else going to own up to it?

my poor old dad had to push start our Ford Capri when he was close to 60 after I had flooded the engine (accelerator pump) with my stationary driving antics

Hehehe. I knew someone would give me stick about my description but couldn't think of another concise way to describe that is only happens when the car is being used, not when parked up.

Good call on the switch from both of you. Appears I have to remove the whole air vents/cubby to get access. I miss the good old days when hazards were on their own circuit and you could just pull the fuse. But the good old days also included drum brakes, bench seats and lap only seat belts.....

Will give it a go and report back.

Hi I had a strange issue with indicators flashing fast and staying on  I was advised to disconnect battery for half an hour and see if this cleared the problem which it did. I think disconnecting the battery makes the cars brain reset. It cost nothing so worth a try to see if it sorts your issue

You dont need to remove the switch to "give it the good news", my phrase literally means to give it a beating = forcibly action it repeatedly, has worked wonders with my indicator stalk, the cruise control switch, the door locking and release button, the hazard warning switch and probably others I have forgotten.

Because they are only switching micro-currents to the relevant canbus controller and not the actual load I believe that the contacts become oxidised and/or dusty and dont self clean with the current passing through them.

Well I took to the switch like a bored 3 year old. As there was no rhyme nor reason as to when the hazards would act up, only time will tell if my furious repeated pressing of the switch did anything.

No joy. Still doing it, even after giving the hazard switch a little abuse.

What gets me is that it only happens while stationary. Never while in motion. Can happen after braking hard or after gently coasting to a stop.

It's very weird and extremely annoying.

Have you disconnected the switch yet and driven without it?

OK. Lots more testing and time. Even with the switch out, I still get the hazards going off (turning on randomly) when stationary. Never happens while in motion. Feels related to braking, but as it's random, it's hard to validate.

On a possibly related note, I've now had the abs, esc and flashing brake warning lights come on together on 4 separate occasions. Always clears on a restart.

Have you checked the connector on the ABS module - the O2 may have the feature where the ABS can flick on the Hazards if it is triggered by emergency braking.
