Adblue?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i just changed my Octavia estate from a 2017 2.0 TDI to a brand new 2019 1.6 TDI DSG and noticed that it has an Adblue filler cap next to the diesel one.

I understand what Adblue is but wonder why the previous 2.0 didn’t have it but the new 1.6 does? Any ideas?

Thanks!

All down to the stricter WLTP emissions regulations. Mercedes and Peugeot have been using Adblue for years as most commercial vehicles these days.:blush

Oh, so Škoda is now using them on all Diesel engines? When did they bring it in for the Octavia?

The Superb Mk3 was the first Skoda diesel to require Adblue in June 2015 and they have been phasing it in as they replace older models with new versions.:o

You're opening a can of worms there.  In typical VAG fashion, it's all over the place...

CR - You'll see some deisel engines engines labelled CR - Common Rail.  These things replaced the old rattly PD (pumpe Duse)

You'll then come across an acronym SCR which you'll see on diesel engines. Selective Catalytic Reduction which requires Adblue. It's been aaround for a while but only on the larger 2.0tdi engines.

Now this is where the fun starts. Adblue is increasingly used on smaller diesel engines like 1.6 but it's being phased in. VW and Audi use the SCR acronym for their 1.6tdi, Skoda doesn't. Poor old SEAT doesn't use it on 1.6tdi not their 2.0!

To the best of my knowledge:

VW doesn't use Adblue in the 1.6tdi of the Golf but does use a 1.6tdi SCR on newer models like T-Roc.

Skoda uses Adblue on 1.6tdi but forget to mention it's an SCR engine.

SEAT uses Adblue on 2.0 but doesn't say it's an SCR engine. Again to best of my knowledge, they still don't use Adblue on their 1.6tdi.

It's here I have sympathy with the dealers, I don't believe they have a clue what they're ordering - whatever turns up I guess. I'd be surprised if anyone is able to tell you when Adblue became available on the 1.6 - that includes Skoda! :)

Skoda price lists use the SCR designation.

Your general point is correct though, it's extremely difficult to tell which car got it when.

This shows SCR versions of 2.0 and 1.6 TDI

Thank you everyone for your responses!

So yes, the price list has “SCR” and my car order form says “CR”.

I think Scot5 May be right by saying that nobody knows until it turns up! Funnily enough the dealer just called me with the “how are you getting on” phonecall. I said “oh, I didn’t know I’d have Adblue”. His response: “Oh, er, Adblue. Yes, I forgot to mention that.” 😂

So, does the SCR have any benefits for the driving of the car, or just for the environment?

Just emissions performance. It won't improve the car in any tangible way for the driver.
