FAULTY TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM

Featured Replies

I bought a brand new Skoda Roomster SE 1.2 TSI 86 5G back in May 2015 from a Skoda official dealer in Scotland which for now will remain un-named.

Made all the services with the official dealer as it follows, and no, there isn’t any mistake that is the real mileage of the car. This is a disable person car and most of the time it just stays parked outside for weeks.

1st Service – 06th May 2016 (4150 miles) - Oil change and the normal checks.

2nd Service – 21st April 2017 (5618 miles) – Inspection with oil change, dust and pollen filter, wipers blade set.

09th May 2017 (5742 miles) – Had planed a trip to north o f Scotland. After driving back from service, and as usual parked the car and left it there till the early morning of May the 9th . After loading the car boot, got in, started engine and a “squeaking” noise come out from the engine. Check everything. Engine was OK no problem at all. Concluded that was the rubber belt or the poly belt. Being very early in the morning and still with Skoda dealer yet closed, decided to go on the road and take it from there. I was able to nearly reach Perth. At Skoda Perth they gave me a replacement car for us to be able to continue our trip. Pick up the Roomster in our way back home. Can’t fault Skoda Perth, thank you very much for all your help and support. The alternator had to be replaced under warranty. Presumably from a too tight belt.

Don’t forget the car just had been serviced.

Coincidence? Hummm maybe, maybe not.

3rd Service – 18th April 2018 (7087 miles) - Inspection with oil change, rear brake discs and pads (*), brake fluid. First MOT.

4th Service – 08th April 2019 (8869 miles) – Inspection with oil change, oil filter, dust and pollen filter, spark plugs, front brake discs and pads (*), brake fluid. Second MOT.

(*) Change of front and back brakes discs due to corrosion.

17th June 2019 (8897 miles) - We planed a trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed and surroundings. Can’t have holidays I guess LOL. After driving for a while on the B740 and just before I got to Abington Services, I just notice for a split second a flickering amber light on my dashboard and a “Pin” sound, which went away as kick as it appeared, no chance to see what it was. Stopped at the service area, went for a coffee, got to the car put the key in the ignition and the “Tyre pressure monitoring system“ light up flashing and the additional audible “pin” sound plus the display states “ Faulty Tyre Pressure Monitoring System”. Got out of the car checked the tyres – all good. Went to the petrol station and checked tyre pressures, got in the car no warning light came on, still I set the system by pressing the button for more than 2 seconds.

Before getting to Berwick the warning “flashing light“ and audible “pin” came on and the same message appeared. So decided upon arriving at Berwick to visit Kwik Fit garage to look for anything like a small puncture or something else. Nothing was found except that after checking pressure of the tyres the light and the message was gone again. So we droved to the hotel, park the car and that was it for the day. Next day we decided to go for a drive along the coast. Got in to the car and all normal, drove 25 miles, parked the car to have something to eat. Two hours later back to the car put the key and the flashing light came on again (for 1m than just stays on) with the additional welcoming “pin” sound. So we drove back to Kwik Fit, as agreed with the very friendly staff for another more exhaustive check. Guess what ? Nothing found and light went off as soon as you put air in the tyres, or if you reset the button between the seats. Now this is getting really silly.

Decided that this wouldn’t ruin the holidays so the only thing left to do was to monitoring myself the tyres each time we were using the car. Come home on the 20th of June phone Skoda Service, was told to take the car on the 24th of June and it would cost £90 + VAT. Which we did.

Now the car went for a service before this issue appeared and they did had to replace the brake discs and pads, and to do all this they need to take the wheels off to have access. It’s the second time now that I have problems after doing the service.

Coincidence ? Again ?

24th June 2019 (9492 miles) - Description of the work done “Checked for faults with tpms, confirmed fault, checked on guide fault finding, found fault stored for tyre pressure display not available. Carried out test plan, asked to check pr codes to find car hasn’t tyre pressure display fitted. Tried to erase fault code, didn’t erase. Coded control unit, fault erased. ok, now.”

Now what they said to me was that the onboard computer had to be re-program because they were not able to erase the fault, but now everything is ok. Skoda charged me £37.50 + VAT instead of the initial £90 + VAT. On our way back home we decided to stop at Tesco for some shopping. Got in to the car and guess what? Yes the light flashing + additional “pin” sound and the message were back. Thank you Skoda for taking my money and do nothing to solve it.

01st July 2019 (9544 miles) – Back to Skoda dealer, this time Skoda gave us replacement car to be able to keep ours for a few days to run some tests. We received our car back on the 02nd July with a title letter “Warranty Repairs Customer Confirmation” with the repair description “Carried out checks for tpms light on, confirmed fault, checked on guided fault finding, found fault stored for tyre pressure display not available. Checked tpi’s, none found, checked tyre pressures, both front very slightly low, reset light with button, road tested approx. 12 miles, light stayed out, left overnight, light stayed out, checked all 4 wheel speeds, all ok. Sent Diss report and asked to check all wiring to abs sensors and checked air gap to pick up rings and pick up ring condition. No authority given.”

This time Skoda didn’t charge anything. Drove home and the fault is still there, now according to the Skoda dealer and I state “It’s annoying to have the light on all the time but you will have to live with it”. Asked what about future MOT’s the answer was “No problem there, it will be stated in the MOT paper but want fail it”.

So, in the end the Skoda dealer in question doesn’t know what to do/ how to solve the problem. Skoda seems not to give a monkey‘s about it. Not acceptable at all.

Now I’m left with the following options

1. Not to go back to the same Skoda dealer, once it seems they don’t know what the hell they are doing. I feel I can’t trust them since two problems after being serviced.

2. Pay another £90 + VAT to a different Skoda dealer for him to take a look at it and probably get no further than I am.

3. Should I be paying money (if proven) to fix something that the previous dealer did wrong when it went for the service.

3. I’m expecting to change the front tyres next year. Should I wait that long and hope that the problem disappears by itself ?

Anyone have had this problem?  Any clues what it might be?

Thanks

I'd find someone local with VCDS and have a scan done, then you'll know what fault is actually stored and what might be relevant.

Hi Rustynuts

Thank you for your suggestion/help.

I also thought about the VCDS and I guess thats one way to go forward.

Hopefully won't cost me a fortune just to plug it in. 😋

Check the VCDS owners' list on this very site. You'll probably find someone who'll check your car for the price of a pint if you drive to them
