Fabia 1.2 HTP Engine Whine

Featured Replies

Hi all.

My Fabia makes this whine noise, which increases with RPM. Doesn't sound like chain (I don't think). I've taken off the drive belt and the noise continues.

Could it be the crankshaft pulley bearing?

Obviously there are many noises in the video, I'm talking about the one that increases then reduces in pitch between 4 and 5 seconds into my video.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

If the noise goes away when you press the clutch it could be the input shaft bearing of the gearbox, also out of curiosity how many miles has the car done?

No, noise maintains when clutch is in.

Car has 105,000 miles.

From what I understand the crankshaft pulley is bolted directly to the crankshaft so there is no crankshaft pulley bearing. Providing the engine oil has been changed regularly (every 8000 miles for example) the engine should not be worn out. If the the performance of the engine is unaffected you could live with it and hope its nothing too serious or take the car to a mechanic for them to see whats wrong.

Yeah, engine has full service history.

That's a shame. I was hoping I could handle this one myself.

Not sure as your video only hear the faintest whine among all the other noise.

HTP 3 cyl engines are very whiney due to the crankshaft balancer which is gear driven from the crank.

Whine peaks greatly in intensity around 2000 rpm and varies on pitch with engine speed. At around 2k the whine can dominate over all the other engine noise.

Its a characteristic of all HTP engines, some are louder than others, but all do it
