mk1 skoda fabia fuel range reading not correct

Featured Replies

hi

bought a 2006 skoda fabia mk1 about 2 months ago. 70000 miles and fully serviced by Skoda

I noticed it was drinking a lot of fuel. the engine light came on and found the o2 sensor needed replacing.

The garage i purchased the car from replaced this and all seemed fine.

over the last couple of weeks i have noticed the fuel range display is saying i am using a lot more fuel than i should be using.

put fuel in last weekend. Said i had 275 miles of fuel. I have travelled 60 miles and it reckons i have used 80 miles worth of fuel.  on average the fuel range reading is about 20% out compared to miles actually driven.

the car seems to be running fine - no loss of power. average mpg saying 46mpg.

am only travelling 400-500 miles a month.

the garage have checked a couple of times and cant find any issues.

Is the fuel range reading accurate?  could it be the fuel range reading is faulty? is anyone else having similar issues.

I appreciate the faster i drive etc the more fuel it will use but am travelling low miles and am sat at 45-50 for most of the journey.

If anyone has any suggestions on what this could be i would be grateful.

Range is purely a calculation from how much fuel you have in the tank against your miles per gallon. It’s pretty vague but if your fuel gauge or MPG is off then obviously this will also effect the given range.

Frankly, the only meaningful way to check MPG is to fill up until the pump clicks off, zero the trip meter and leave it alone. Now drive until the "low fuel" light comes on, at which point you should have about 1 gallon plus reserve. Fill again as above, and divide trip reading by fuel delivered.
