Hi all,

 

I am new here and hope someone can help or point me in the right direction, I have a 57 plate skoda Octavia 1.6fsi it was driving lovely and has been since I had it. However, recently after a short 10 mile journey i came to a stop and the engine died. 

It would turn over but not start.

 

The breakdown guy came out and after plugging in said it was the crank shaft sensor. I got a new one and after about 2 hours managed to get it replaced (these are not in the easiest of places for access!)

However, this didn't cure the problem. 

 

I left the car for a while and as the battery went flat I bought a new one m, fitted it and tried to start. I noticed when the ignition is on the brake lights come on, front wipers wont go on at all, if I indicate right there is a green light on the dash that looks like a foot with a pad either side, the steering warning also comes on? 

The car will still turnover but not start.

 

I have checked all the fuses which are ok double checked charging the battery and earth points (as best as I can may of missed some?) but I still have the same issue turnover won't start and all the random electrical problems above.

 

Does anyone have any idea where I start with this? 

 

Any help much appreciated.

Full fault code scan would be useful to be honest.

Yes I am waiting on a lead to do this at the moment. But yes the rev counter does move when cranking.

Just a bit of an update.....

My cable still hasn't arrived yet but I got hold of a friends basic elm327 and put it through a free obd program. (not the best to use on these types of car I know the vcds etc. Is the most comprehensive) 

But got error code P0404 this is something to do with the egr but wouldn't of thought this would stop it starting completely?

 

I have also attached 2 x pics one of the dash when indicating right (the foot icon seems to be to do with automatic transmission although this car is a manual and I've never seen that light before)

 

Also don't know if it's normal but the relay marked 449 (upside down on the left of my pic) is extremely hot to the touch after ignition has been on for a bit. 

 

Once I get my cable I will update a bit more with hopefully some more in depth code/fault reads.

And the low fuel indicator is lit even though the fuel is not low.

Funny thanks happen when the battery has been low voltage, As a first step I would disconnect the new battery for a few minutes to be sure that when you reconnect it again really is a clean reboot with no hangovers.

if you have a multi-meter, check the battery is around 12.6 V or higher. The electronics are more sensitive to reduced voltage on our cars compared with previous generations.

Yes the fuel light is on too with just under half a tank on the guage (this could also be a duff reading? Although I have put at least 15liters from petrol cans in so I know it has fuel), I have put a meter on the battery and have a good 12.83v. No change disconnecting for a bit then putting back on - same p0404 code and turns over but wont start.

 

Also this evening I have taken out and cleaned and tested the starter motor as well just incase which is all working well. 

 

I guess something is shorting maybe, but no idea where I'd start and I'd if hoped that a fuse may of blown if that was the case?

Just a mini update still no cable!!

 

I manage to get at the brake like switch this evening and change it however didn't make any difference. (Another PITA to get at too!) 

 

When I turn ignition on and brake lights come on if I take the bulbs out or disconnect the wiring plug and put back in the bulbs do stay off and work correctly when the brake pedal is pressed and released. But turning ignition off then on again makes them come back on constant again if this means anything to anyone?

 

Think I need to try and get hold of a schematic and trace back all the wiring? I can't seem to find a Haynes for this car though only petrol and diesel till 2004

I imagine that it might be a bit more complicated than this but a dodgy earth connection can cause all sorts of electrical or electronic weirdness so that might be worth looking for to see if an earth strap has come adrift somewhere?

 

Best of luck with it anyway - sounds like a nightmare. 😬

Hi thank you, I have checked and re seated the earth points as many as I can find and they all seem ok I have also greased them up too. 

 

I did find if I remove fuse 6 from the dash panel which apparently covers the following: Instrument cluster, Control unit for automatic gearbox, Control unit for electromechanical power steering, Parking aid; Haldex clutch

 

Then the brake lights no longer come on with the ignition so possibly instrument cluster at fault? Or cabling associated with it.

 

Hopefully my cable comes this week so I can get a code read properly and see what comes up.

Hi there - yeah, it was a bit of a long shot to be honest - blame years of owning Italian cars(!)

It sounds like a module has failed or perhaps needs to be reset so a scan should at least help you isolate which bit has gone kaput.

With so many reports of low voltage, I would check the engine bay fuse box location.

There are reports of burnt printed circuit board and loose fuses caused by overheating, leading to low voltage supply through those fuses.

Easy to check to eliminate this known fault.

Thank you! I will get the engine bay fuse box out tomorrow and have a look. 

 

I did notice as in the image attached my engine bay fuse box doesn't seem to have a bridge plate in the (if you look from the front of the car) left relay slot. I haven't removed it so I imagine it doesn't need to be there? Or is it worth bridging this?

Fuse box in the engine bay taken apart all clean and clear. All tracks checked for continuity and all fuses checked before putting back together.

Still won't start and same errors coming up on a scan. Battery has been off and fully charged just to make sure too.

Is it worth taking instrument cluster out and checking this? Do I need to anything specific before disconnecting?

Ok I have found it - Attached image of read out when cranking (Including a few other sensor readings) The Engine speed is on 240/min.

No not tried jumping, but it is a brand new battery and fully charged. I shall try a jump though see what happens.

So sorry for the delay coming back been on holiday …..

I did take the ABS pump out and module - reseated the cable and that has cleared the ABS module fault but jumping hasn't really made any difference.

 

Live log attached of engine speed etc.

 

I also did a clear and re read of faults - Engine oil temp sensor showed up but it does clear until the engine has been cranked a few times.

I see engine timing angle -2.3 do I need to do anything with this since I changed the crank position sensor?

I had a daft problem with my  fabia vrs, battery replaced. Kept loosing charge and especially when turning corners, the abs would put more strain on system, turned out to be a corroded lead from the alternater that wasnt charging the battery. Even though you could get a voltage read through the cable, when opened up its was vitually dust.

So kind of gave up on the car for a bit what with holidays and other things. The battery has been fully charged and and tested jumping at the same time just to be sure and still no start.

 

I've gone through the usual pre checks and now I'm not getting any spark!

Any idea on how I test the coils to make sure they are getting signal? Vcds doesn't show any misfire faults or anything like that but there is no spark on any of the 4 coils.

 

Or is there anyway if forcing with vcds to make it spark or send a signal to spark?

As it was mentioned the cranking speed was a little slow I have now put a new starter motor in and get the following reading:

Crank speed consistently around the 280 mark.

 

 

 

Also my throttle position sensor? Seems to have lost its adaption. Not sure this makes a difference, i tried to reset but just displays error instead of "adp run or adp ok"

The car still doesnt seem to produce a spark, I have checked fuses and checked my spark tester still works on 2 other vehicles.

I am at a total loss with where to go next on this car :(
