Better turbo for Tsi

Featured Replies

Has anyone replaced a 1.2 Tsi turbo with a bigger or better one? I have an 86 BHP Tsi and it seems to be developing turbo problems, lack of power and engine warning lights etc so I thought this would be a good time to replace the turbo with a better one that would give more performance.

Have you had the issue diagnosed as the Accuator?

Best find out exactly what is wrong and is it the Turbo and not timing or ignition, coil / lead /plug problems.

someone will be along that knows about turbos and has done an upgrade, and the remap you will need and any other mods.

Dropped you a PM 👍

Theres no "bolt on" upgrade as the mk2 tsi is charge cooled. All the upgrades out there require changing nearly everything so you can fit an intercooler.

Turbo actuator problem on CBZA/CBZB engines throw a P334B DTC error code, go into limp mode, (around 30mph flat out), sometimes restarting the car will fix it for a while, if the EML light comes on, you have to clear the code first, but then it may not fix it.

2 possible reasons for the fault are

Reason 1. Failing/failed Electrical turbo actuator (probably internal gear problem or position sensor)

Solution: replace the actuator, price fitted at Skoda dealer I was quoted was £244 iirc. Not every turbo has a replaceable actuator though, depending when it was built.

Reason 2.. The wastegate is jamming on the control shaft, maybe carbon build or heat damage.

Solution A:  remove heat shield, spray penetrating oil on the shaft going into the turbo housing, i.e. the final bit. Preferably detatch the actuator shaft and then you can work the wastegate mech loose. This has worked for some, but some found it only a temporary fix

Solution B: Replace complete Turbo/actuator, cost me £1333 at Skoda, 2 yr warranty. Mine had the 03f145701rx part (85ps late 2013)

You can remap your engine, the 86ps and 105ps are the same engine and turbo AFAIK but with a different map. Remaps to around 120ps are supposedly available.

The intercooler is water cooled and integrated with the inlet manifold. I doubt you'll be able to upgrade or improve on that.

Best start with scanning for error codes. Cheap DTC readers are available from Carparts4less, ECP and many other places. My Streetwize DTC reader cost £16

Or could try something fancier, OBD eleven, Carista, VCDS or even ask a garage to scan

At Rootytooty says it may just be misfiring due to lead failure and/or coil pack failing, both common on this engine.

Do this before changing turbos.....

The amber engine light came on again so I tried using a Clarke scanner from Machine Mart but it only allowed me to clear the code and described it as a manufacturer specific code with no explanation of what the fault was. A few days later it was back on again so I disconnected the actuator from the waste gate, moved it around a bit and lubricated it, after I reconnected it the light went straight off so I started looking for a replacement actuator, there are plenty for sale on the internet as it's obviously a very common fault but there are two sizes of rod, 10cm and 11.6cm. Does anyone know where to properly take the measurements or are all Fabia 1.2 Tsi engines fitted with the 10cm version?

I've done some research into better turbos too and there are hybrid ones for sale for just under £400 but I'm not sure if they're going to make much difference on their own, so I might consider a remap instead if anyone can recommend a good company in Lancashire. I'm not looking for a huge increase in power just to be able to overtake lorries on the motorway and go up hills without changing gear so much, I appreciate that it's down  on power at the moment but it was struggling to keep up to 60 mph the other day because there was a slight incline and I ended up in third gear for half a mile until the road leveled out again, the engine light wasn't on at this point either so I must do something about it soon.

So first you need it to have the BHP it is supposed to before remapping.

What is yours a 105ps 1.2TSI?

I had booked mine in at my local independantl VAG specialist to do the Chain tensioner, at 80k without being replaced, wasn't showing signs but decided to change as precaution and having new clutch and LSD fitted.

But also heard noises from turbo which was diagnosed as the turbo , needed a replacing, looked at rtmg they quoted 10 weeks. The specialists quoted £1350, Inc fitting that and chain tensioner, Clutch and LSD made an expensive fix just before Christmas. Did reduce the turbo by £400, by getting a factory refurb old unit exhange from TPS reducing bill to £950.

Had planned to get rtmg in 2019, but maybe not as Ive replaced earlier than wanted to.

It was originally an 86 BHP engine so probably about 50 at the moment 😒

Mine was 84hp then 121hp with eco map and cat back. Then 142hp with sports cat then back to 121hp as I replaced the sport cat back to standard cuz it failed emissions. Still contemplating another Sports Cat and a hybrid turbo.

That's impressive! Do you have any links for the cat back and ecomap? You're not far from me so I might be able to use the same place that you did

Cat back fitted by Powerfow,  Kirkham Garage Blackburn Rd, Oswaldtwistle, Accrington  BB5 4NZ.

Map done by Unicorn Motor Developments Unit E1, Ford street, Stockport SK3 0BT.

Ecomap returns 43-45mpg at 70 on Tesco 99. Drag Race App I got 0-60 in 8 6 sec from Skoda 11.1 sec.

There's a story behind sports cat replaced,  got it in Feb 18 , just after MOT, from Tony Banks. But fail emission at 23% for 2019. Went back to TB they fitted a second cat added their cat cleaner still failed. Blamed it on the map, didn't have the time to let TB take off send to Long life for warranty. So got a type approved standard cat exhaust band passed at 0%. By this time the sports cat warranty ran out TB said would need to pay to go through warranty, refunded if successful. In mean wife got rid of the exhaust. So dropped claim.

My car is a 60 reg Fabia MK2 Elegance with 94k

Thanks that’s really helpful, does it sound much different with the cat back exhaust and did you need to alter the rear bumper?

It a quite system with two resonator box, large one in the middle with slightly smaller one one the end. No bumper changes as outlet from the end resonator is as original, exhaust pipe is hidden by the bumper.

I didn't want the exhaust louder then the original, my car is a sleeper.

It looks perfectly standard except for remap , cat back , LSD , polyflex bushes all round , Monroe OEspectrum sports dampers , LUK clutch and Pipercross Airfilter.

But a MC sleeper is not that easy, its up to you how loud it would be.

I've found a place near Wigan called Danmar who do custom exhausts, I've told them that I don't want it to be much louder than it is now with the factory exhaust and they've recommended a 2 inch diameter pipe with a single silncer and twin tail pipes. Does anyone have experience of this set up on a Fabia Tsi and has anyone here used Danmar?
