ok thanks again , is it unheard of that they might be intermitent ?

also as the car was standing the front brakes are contaminated and at higher speed braking such as off the motorway the pedal does pulse a little as if warped disks which im going to replace ,could that be upsetting something maybe ??

OK quick update on this .it happened again today asking for power so when I got home I turned it off and plugged the diagnostic kit in and it gave a p0101 (mass airflow fault).

Does that throw any light on the situation (no pun intended ;+) ). The car behaves the same light on or off . it was standing for 4 years so wondered if somat needs cleaning ?

Thanks again guys...

PS all brakes now replaced and like new.

The scan tool may have been VCDS which reports that 7329 is Mass Air Flow sensor, and in that case it was a bad seal.

Thanks I'll look into it ...

I have had intermittent P0101 errors, each time the combination of hot weather and overrun / engine braking.

Initial diagnosis by local VAG specialist. They wanted to change MAF but at £200 plus car running fine, unlike when MAF failed on my 1.9PD A4, so I held back. After I bought an elCheapo scanner.

I found various posts across VAG forums about P0101 still occurring after MAF replaced.

While not due at last service hence not changed then I changed the air filter about 3 months ago. The one fitted had all the VAG logos moulded so I presume was genuine VAG / TPS sourced.

ECP listed several but I went for Bosch. The removed filter didn't look particularly dirty or clogged but with the new filter the car felt to run better plus so far no further P0101 errors.

After standing your air filter could have deteriorated.

Other causes of P0101 are air leaks as mentioned, connector & wiring to the MAF, the MAP which I believe is a combined pressure and temperature sensor, connector & wiring to the MAP. The MAP is at the front low down towards the right. The connector is just accessible from above, not sure if removal and replacement would be. Easy from below .... once undertray removed .....

If the MAF cleaning is often at best a temporary fix only particularly with this design.

A better option could be another from a breakers, just be sure exactly the right one. The code for the MAF  fitted on the 2.0 is almost the same but the sensor is different.

I bought one for about £20 but still in the bag. I would have fitted it if the fault had occurred more often or could be reproduced.

all sorted now ,it was the o ring on the airbox side , weird but obviously enough to upset the maf..
