Rear wiper/ boot light problem mk2 estate

I'm having an intermittent problem with my rear wiper- have buggered about with the striker plate as discussed in a previous post, which seems to work for a wee while then it gives up again. (Half hour commute to work tonight in the pssn rain, it lasted about 15mins.) 

Also, rear boot lights, which I didn't even realise existed for a few months(!), weren't working til I took out the bulbs, realized they weren't wired up, (strange right?..),wired them up, but they don't go off when car is unlocked. Hmmm, now I no why they were disconnected. Not really a problem with the boot cover in place but at night there's a bit of a ghostly glow from the back..

Can anyone help? The wiper is the most annoying thing. Thanks in advance.
