Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30 Longlife Oil for Octavia vRS mark II

Featured Replies

I'm barely a week into running my new car in but am conscious about keeping an eye on the oil level as well as how I drive as I've been told to expect a fair amount of oil to be burnt in the first 1500km. I spent most of today calling around to find somewhere that stocks the officially recommended oil - Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30 Longlife Oil - as described in the documentation about variable length servicing I received with the car.

The trouble is that nobody sells the damn stuff and I am a little reluctant to try other equivalent oils at this stage. The really odd thing is that even my local Skoda dealer does not stock it and they recommended something by Mobil or Castrol. The local Audi and VolksWagen dealers didn't stock it either and suggested the Castrol.

The dealer I bought the car from does have the right Shell oil but I'm not going to be near there until next week. My last (and thankfully successful) option was to visit my local Shell petrol station. I called to check the price and stock but when I actually went to visit, the exact type of oil was not there.

I notice that Shell have a new 'VX' version and yes I checked that it was the petrol and not diesel oil but all the same, there were slight differences whether I took the original or so called 'new' version. The problem was that they were all rated with a gauge of 5W-30, 5W-40 or 10W-40. There was nothing with 0W-30 and that's what Skoda recommends.

I guess I should check the VW engine oil specification numbers (do you guys have that information to hand) on the back of the bottles but apart from narrowing it down that way, why is it so difficult to get the right oil? Do any of you use something other than Shell or Castrol oils for your flexible service interval Octavia's, vRS or otherwise?

The Shell Helix Ultra VX is the latest oil - and is backwards compatible with the previous generation oils, in fact all oils except non-longlife PD oil - so the VX would do you just fine, in fact if you check you'll probably find thats what your local VW/Audi dealers are using -- it's what we use.

I posted this before, but have a look at www.opieoils.co.uk they sell Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL Longlife Plus 0W-30 which meets the VW spec 503.00, 506.00 and 506.01.

Go to the site and click on Fuchs and then scroll down to the Longlife Plus and you will find a pdf specification to click and that will give you all the info you need.

They will ship out to you postage free overnight and their service is excellent, so why trape around the local auto shops and car dealers when the Net will do the work for you.

Fuchs lubricants by the way are a very high quality product and they known for their specialist lubricants covering many industries, so it is not a Micky Mouse organisation, you can buy with confidence.

IIRR Fuchs is what goes in on the production line.

Any oil that meets VW 506.01 should be fine. The key thing is it meets that standard. VAG don't hand out approvals out like sweeties and would be down like a ton of bricks on any company dishonestly claiming approval.

There is a post on here somewhere that lists many, many oils approved to VAG standards, grouped by the standard(s) with which they comply.

I'm using Comma 506.01 oil,

Picked some up from my local Halfords myself. I got a free 1 Litre pack when I took delivery of my Octy from the Dealer.

Have people found the Mk2 RS to use much oil ? That reminds me I must check mine :o

Mine has had about 0.5 litre!.

:o done over 900 miles and I havent even lifted the bonnet on miine :o

Mine used a half a litre in the first 3k.

About half a litre in 2000 miles.

Mine has had about 0.5 litre!.

I'm glad this thread has been posted, just been out to check and very low again!.

Put in a further 0.5 litre of 5W-30W Castrol Edge, which I'm reliably informed is the correct type for this engine.

try www.opieoils.co.uk

Just correcting typo.

Interesting site - pumped in my car info and will await their answer, probably tomorrow as they must all be asleep by now!

You've no excuse :P

Now I know why youv'e been checking this thread out, your'e not as young as you used to be. :P

Castrol Edge does not meet the full specification, certainly not for the latest Diesel engines, it only meets VW 502/503.01 and 505.00.

To meet the full extended oil change requirement you need an oil that meets 506.01.

As I said in a previous Thread this whole question of engine lubricants is one of total confusion, with Skoda dealers saying one thing, Skoda another and the Oil companies something else again. We the poor bloody owners are left trying to find the truth. At least on my container of Fuchs oil it has clearly written " meets 506.01" so that is what goes in as a top up and when the full oil change time comes I suspect the Skoda dealers may have just possibly sorted themselves out.

That said both Skoda and VW should sort out their dealership service departments to make very sure they are only using lubricants that meet the correct requirements. This will present those dealerships with a bulk oil stocking problem because they probably are currently doing more oil changes on lower engine spec models and putting in fully synthetic very high spec oils becomes an expensive over kill. Not our problem though and it needs to be sorted.

Toneboy, that's an interesting point.

What has annoyed me is the inconsistant information supplied by different dealers even when they are both for Skoda. You would have thought they would at least stock the same stuff as another Skoda dealer but they asked if I had bought the car from them and when I said "no", they told me that the oil they use is something by Mobile. Whilst it may be ok, there was no mention of the VW specification on the bottle and the Audi garage that I had visited before said that they (and VW/Skoda) all use the same 'Audi' oil which is in fact Castrol SLX 5W-30.

Apart from eBay, I haven't been able to get the 0W-30 oil from anywhere else and the VW 50x xx specifications are very confusing. According to some personal research, the 503.01 is recommended for Petrol turbo engines and should be used in my vRS. However, most of these oils state only 503.00. I believe the 506.01 you are refering to are specifically for diesel engines but I could be wrong.

Then it materialises that the numbers have since been superceeded by 504/507 so I'm still not completely convinced which is best (although the Fuchs sounds good). I'll just make sure its fully synthetic, Longlife and 5W-30 (or 0W-30 if I can get it).

507 spec oil is used in those engines that do have a particle filter, but is an extended life oil change lubricant.

www.opieoils.co.uk Fuchs Titan GTI longlife 111 5w-30 oil meets the 507 spec.

I think I mentioned before, I got my Castrol 1 litre 0W-30 for top-up in Halfords locally. Nearly

If you are going to change your oil every 12 month then any good quality oil that meets modern petrol engine specs should do the trick, long life synthetic oil would be a waste of money in this case.

That's interesting - I've got till end of June to decide but it sounds like a good make of semi synthetic would do.

I'm using Comma 506.01 oil, £37.99 for 5 litres at my local motor supplies shop last time I bought.

Why not use VWG own accessory pd oil, Quantum, meets the spec (as you would expect) part no ZGB115QLB00462 its approx £28 + Vodka And Tonic :D

DO NOT USE THIS INFO I AM KNACKERED AND TALKING DRIVEL I THOUGHT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT PD ENGINES SORRY FOLKS! (Iam going to bed before I make an even bigger fool of m'self)
