Coolant level dropping - Fabia Mk1 VRS

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

I've noticed the coolant level keeps needing topping up - especially in this hot weather and normally after the car has been standing in traffic. The engine isn't overheating, and I can't see any obvious leaks. I've checked the engine oil, and its not milky (so I'm guessing the head gasket isn't blown). Both fans work when the AC is on, but I'm wondering if they aren't working properly to cool the radiator. Any suggestions/advice/tests I can do will be much appreciated,

thanks folks

Dave

Hi Dave, my son has the same issue with his vrs mk 1fabia, I have since become the owner of it and posed the same questions/suggestions.

It is a classic sign of a head gasket leaking, confirmed by a mechanic and several members on this forum,

I have yet to decide if I carry out this work myself or have an independent garage to sort it form, I was quoted £1200 for head skimming and new cam belt / water pump as well.

This head gasket issue may have stemmed from my son having it tuned to 180 bhp without fitting stronger head bolts.

Oh and be careful as the head gasket may give way suddenly and boil the engine.

I am fortunate that my vrs is a project car.

Its on the "mk 1 fabia projects section"

Cheers.

Pressure test the cooling system. If it holds pressure for 1/2 hour or so it’s probably the head gasket.
