Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

My Octavia vrs isn't well. Rough start up and called out garage. Put diagnostics on it and got the attached. Car on way to Skoda Dumfries!

Is this a petrol or diesel? Be interested to know the outcome.

So what fixed it? Crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor or coilpack on cylinder 3?

My money is on crankshaft sensor as it's a constant fault but part of me says it's just a coilpack breaking down and that's caused the other code.

It's a petrol

Just had phone call and the issue is timing chain related. They say the head needs to come off to get full assessment at £568 in labour not including any parts! After that it could be upto £1900 just in labour! According to the garage it's not a common fault!

Did they explain the steps they've taken to diagnose a timing chain issue?

Might be worth getting a second opinion, however if it really is a timing chain issue then driving it may not be wise!

What's the mileage and service history like?

Just under 86000 and has full service history but not dealer! Gutted! Great car the vrs!

Having spoke to the garage that looks after my car I'm going to go with the head removal to get a full picture and then re assess once I've got a full picture

Ah - ok. Read this thread to see where they're coming from:

However,  I'm not sure that the head needs to come off yet. They want to be sure of the damage to be able to quote you properly, rather than replace the chain, guides and tensioner just to find out one of the valves is bent and the head and a piston top is damaged by that happening, then charge you the labour for taking off the chain, guides and tensioner to fix it with potentially a replacement engine or head.

I'm not convinced that there's been any piston to valve contact though and think it's just ever so slightly out of timing as the tensioner has not fully failed or the chain is stretched.

Can they not put a boroscope down each spark plug hole to see what's going on? If not they're plan is probably best and whilst it might prove to be an unnecessary expense, it might be the safest option for your wallet.

What have they quoted you cost wise at the moment? It's not going to be cheap!

Engine is fecked! Rods bent cylinder head damaged and metal in oil! Any one know any second hand engine suppliers! Quoted best part of £6k to repair. Skoda UK as much use as chocolate fire guard!

What caused it? Failed timing chain/tensioner?

How long ago did you buy the car and where from? What year is it?

You could get a replacement engine fitted and have the same problem again... at that kind of repair cost I would be seriously thinking about getting another car and selling the one with the broken engine for spares/repairs.

There are a few reconditioned engines around that have been stripped back and had the timing chain issue resolved.

You could... or you could have the revised timing chain tensioner fitted as part of the engine replacement process.
