Removing and fitting the ABS pump

Featured Replies

Hello, I want to send off my ABS pump to be repaired since it is faulty, i was wondering if anyone knows the best way to remove the part from the car or any troubles they had trying to remove it for example; bleeding the brakes or trying to get to all the bolts holding the pump ? The car is a Skoda Fabia Comfort Mk 1 and a 2004 ?

Thanks

What makes you think the ABS pump is faulty

I have taken it to a garage and they have said that the pump needs repairing :)

Just out of interest have you checked the fuses on top of the battery?

No I have not, wouldn't the diagnostic machine at the garage say if it was the fuses ?

It would say ABS pump open circuit. Commonly miss diagnosed by muppets as a pump that’s changed only to find it’s a fuse that’s cracked.

Oh okay I see Is it something I can diagnose or will I have to take it to a garage to see if anything is wrong ?

Pop the cover up on top of the battery and check the fuse hasn’t cracked. It’s quite tricky to spot so look hard.

Hello I just had a look and I cannot see any fuses initially?

Did you lift the top cover on the battery?

Yes I have I could not see any fuses

You have lifted the whole thing off. The cover separates into two.

Oh okay I see thank you :)

Try to get a close-up of the right-hand one of those, with red/green wire going to it, or give it a gentle push in the middle to see if it cracks in half.

The ABS pumps are known to fail....usually the motherboard goes......I sent mine off for testing ..mobo gone unable to repair...so I said bin it not realising that the ABS unit can be purchased as two separate items...the black plastic electrics section & the silver metal hydraulic block......

So I had to get a whole unit..instead of just the electronics section.....oh & they just bolt together with a few small screws....

The only "complex" bit was doing a full bleed & coding the new unit with VCDS.....

They are known fail this is true. Always worth checking that fuse first though.

Oh okay I see the wires seem to be fine and are not broken even when I nudge them. So can the whole ABS pump be removed from the car quite easily ? From what I have seen its sitting on a bracket so would it be easier to take the bracket off with the pump connected to it ? I will probably try to get it reconditioned so I will not have to pair it to the car :) just need to know if it's difficult to get out.

Piece of cake to come off with the bracket.

If you wedge a pry bar between the brake pedal and the seat to apply pressure to the brake pedal you won’t let air into the brake system which makes bleeding that bit easier.
