1.2 to 1.4 engine swap possible?

Featured Replies

After looking at the Octavia,

There is both the 1.2TSI 110PS (same as the Fabia MK3 1.2TSI 90/110PS)

and also the 1.4TSI 150PS

Looking at images, engine mount part nos and suchlike, it appears with very little modification it looks a fairly 'simple' job to swap them over..

The 1.4 is a very reliable proven engine, and while it seems the 1.5 tsi evo would also be a direct fit, that has a few issues which i am aware of (google 1.5 tsi kangaroo for examples).

Mapped stage1 to 185ps it also kicks out 300+nm of torque, which i think would be a really nice pairing for the MK3, its only a few KG heavier than the 1.2 aswell.

Viability?

Physically it should be absolutely do able. I think your issue would be the body wiring.

Find the engine codes and see what other cars it is also in. If it’s in a polo or Ibiza then it’s probably going to be more straight forwards.

Skoda built a limited number of Mk3 Fabia with a 1.4TSI /DSG 125ps.

This was the R5 limited edition tribute.

Anything can be done if you have the skills the parts and throw the money at it.

Just chop in the Fabia and get an Ibiza, Leon, Polo or A1 /S1 with 140/150 ps to 200ps +.

Get for not much more money if any with the brakes and springs / suspension / handling and wheels / tyres to suit a warm / hot hatch which is easy to insure and then can be tuned a bit more.

I like the body shape of the Fabia, plus, what's more humiliating to a boy racer than being overtaken by a Skoda Fabia? 😂

Engine swap would be one of a long list of upgrades tbh,

Aftermarket engine mounts, exhaust, coilovers, maybe different alloys+tyres, anti roll bar, bushes upgrades etc etc to name just a few.

I want to do it 'by the book' so upgrading all the supporting components to handle the power and stresses, and keeping it looking as close to standard (except lowering slightly with the coils but that's more of a given since the stock suspension is way too soft and who buys coilovers to have no drop? 😂)

By putting a 1.4 in there it isn't some silly madhouse machine, its just a slightly larger version with almost identical layout of literally everything, wiring harnesses coolant lines intakes are all the same as the 1.2. I dont just want to go all out maximum power without considering all the other things that will need doing too.

You might find that some items are the same. Go through zap7 if the 1.4 variant is listed. You might also find stuff like the brakes, cooling system, gearbox are the same.

I've actually been looking at a 1.8TSI from a Polo GTI. Then IS38 turbo and intercooler etc, for ~375bhp and 500nm.

That would entail swapping the ECU parts of the wiring harness and probably some other components too as the ECU is different.

Also gearbox and driveshafts would likely need changing. But they would just get transplanted from a polo gti.

The 1.4TSI swap would be as easy as swapping the engine and mapping the ECU. Along with an uprated clutch.

If you got the 1.4 without ACT anyway, with ACT would possibly require some extra modification.

This won't be happening for some time though. I have been posting some of my modifications in the Projects forum here:
