Using an old wheel as a spare?

Featured Replies

When my new (to me) Octavia had been in my hands less than a fortnight I managed to kerb an alloy badly. The wheel is structurally sound but ugly (I continued using it for a couple of weeks until I got a replacement. It's now been sat in my garage for a couple of years unused. My Octy came with a steel 16" spare and jack etc. I'm wondering if I got a tyre fitted to the spare alloy I could use this as a full size spare instead? It would have the advantage of allowing me to drive further and faster with the spare on (the steel one is limited to 50mph max and 50 miles max). Will it fit in the spare wheel well? Any disadvantages I'm unaware of?

I have a Full size Gemini Alloy fitted with a 225/40/18 Tyre in the wheel well of my Octavia MK III 245 Hatch. The only thing I had to do was trim the sides off the polystyrene jack holder and cut some off the bottom to make the boot floor sit flat.

So Yes it should fit.

Would it be possible to get the damaged wheel refurbished so you could use it normally? This might give you a bit of extra flexibility when you need to replace tyre(s), e.g. if you like to replace tyres in pairs, you can scrap the worst 2 out of 3 and keep the best as the spare.

That's good to know, as I have been thinking of getting a spare for the Scout, and looking at matching wheels on Ebay.
