Octy 2016 6-speed manual 2nd gear crunchy

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Coming into my third week driving my Octavia, loving the driving so far, have done a few mods (reversing camera, dash cams fitted, etc) so far. Have pushed 58mpg even with some playing during my regular 60 mile drive of motorway/country A roads/town driving and the ride quality is phenomenal over my past car (which I thought was an amazing upgrade over my first small car!). My first DPF regen had me puzzled why it was keeping the revs at 1000 at traffic lights, but the forum search came to the rescue again and it completed before I got home.

My only remaining questions are (and somewhat relieved by reading posts on here regarding the manual 6 speed boxes), mine is a bit crunchy going into 2nd (and somewhat 1st)? It does ease with the gearbox warming up, but it is still there a little. I've also noticed that if I am a bit quick during brisk acceleration on the clutch and press "too early", I get a wicked jolt through the car. Pulls lovely, with no noticeable abnormal vibrations/sounds once in gear, just a lil crunchy getting it into 1st/2nd. Don't recall anything like this during the test drive, but was quite a sedate drive unfortunately with rush hour traffic (and me being nervous with a car that wasn't yet mine!)

Previously only driven petrols with a max power of 98ps, and diesel vans at work where ALL the gears are crunchy all of the time, so please excuse my ignorance if this is typical of a diesel setup!

Cheers!

Highly common issue (/'feature') across all manual Mk3 Octavias. Essentially nothing to worry about, but you're right - it does ease once the gearbox heats up a bit.

Ads230 is right, I'm on my fourth Octavia and they all do it, from the MK2 onwards.

1st to 2nd when its cold is unpleasant but improves as the gearbox warms.  I found a little maneuver that helps, but will be overkill for some.

Rather than pulling strait down from 1st to 2nd when cold, I come out of first with the gearstick in neutral, then find 2nd.  It removes some of the noticable crunch and might be worth a try :)

Double de-clutching from days of old ;) . That works, and also changing down - pre-rev / rev-match if you can to get from 2nd to first, such as pulling up at a junction
