Engine fault: Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump

Featured Replies

My engine warning light came on today. Luckily, being equipped with various diagnostic tools including OBD-Eleven, I diagnosed "Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump".

Now I have seen this error before when scanning using OBDEleven, but I've always cleared it and thought nothing of it as sometimes you see errors that are insignificant. However, this time, its thrown the engine warning light.

So, what is it? I have a warranty, so I'm not so worried about that, just curious what it is and if I need to get it in before the warranty lapses.

thanks!

Nick

It’s an electric pump to keep circulating coolant around the turbocharger coolant circuit after the engine has stopped.

Oh, I thought it was something to do with an intercooler. If it's turbo cooling, maybe I shouldn't have ignored it for 6 months! Best get it booked in...

thanks

Its not to cool the turbo, its the pump for the charge air cooling circuit, see RHS of picture

From what information I have seen these engines do not have a watercooled turbo.

Thanks SuperbTWM.

I forgot the tdi turbo isn’t in that charge air coolant circuit like it is on the tsi 🥴

Am I right in thinking, that if failure of that pump causes an issue, then the engine will go into reduced power/limp mode as well as putting the mil warning lamp on ?

If it has the lamp on but drives ok, it obviously needs fixing but isn’t causing a major problem.

I'm not sure on the logic, its a bit strange that the fault has been in before but not brought the light on yet now it has. Unless before the pump was still working in a fashion but now the intake temps may have gotten high the ECU might have triggered the EML.

Well as an update, the MIL light has turned itself off again today. Sods law as I was going to phone and get it booked in on Monday. I haven't checked to see if the fault is still logged but as I haven't cleared it, I'll assume it will be...

Hi Nik, I just had this issue with my Octavia vRS TDi. I left it for a while but after a few months I noticed that it went into limp mode when the engine temp hit 100c. Had to get a replacement pump which was around £160 and labour on top of that but if you are within warranty I would expect that would be covered.

I've had the car in to Murry Skoda in Plymouth. They collected my car, diagnosed the same fault I had, went through the troubleshooting procedure and found an electrical connection loose. Cleaned it, plugged it in properly, fault cleared, diagnosis now fine, delivered it back valeted and didn't charge me!

Now there's good service - especially since I didn't buy the car from them and my warranty is with Ford!!

They are my local so will get repeat business, but excellent customer service to someone that wasn't a previous customer.

Exactly what happened to my Karoq last week. A wire had snapped in the electrical connection. New connection on it's way.
