Chocolate pistons

Featured Replies

Just returned from a 2000 mile trip to the continent running on German autobahns to the mountain passes of the Austrian Tyrol. From the posts moaning about the fragility of the tsi engines I was rather intrepid about embarking on such a trip. Nothing to worry about! On the autobahns it is pedal to the metal and many VAG engines wizzed past me at 130kmh plus with no pistons bursting up through the top of engine blocks and no necklaces of cam chains littering the hard shoulder among failed tensioners. So, do the tsi engines bound for the UK fitted with chocolate pistons and muckite cam chains and tensioners? I suspect not. I used E10, Super and Super plus fuels and found no startling difference with oil consumption barely noticeable on the stick. The poor British owners and their scaremongering stories.

I have the 1.4tsi with the worst known pistons and I’ve just come back from Poland which was around 2,500 miles. Now on 120k I didn’t hesitate when the autobahns made their appearance, literally foot to the floor and reached 137mph in no time. The car ran like an absolutely dream and didn’t use a drop of oil either. Service it with the correct oil and plugs and it’ll look after you. I do mine every January or 10k miles whichever comes first.

i stuck to shell stations just for the 100ron and the odd BP with their 102. When we hit France there were more ARAL (I think they were called) so theirs was the super plus.

Pistons were / are not chocolate but rings / scrappers have been and injectors and crap inlet manifolds and dodge engine managements.

Obviously not all are there are hundreds of thousands of Mk4 and Mk5 TSI's going strong, 1.4, 1.8 &2.0. Thousands not though.

Global actually, as the US, Australia & China get different treatment, and Class Actions win there.
