Headlamp problems

Featured Replies

I recently noticed severe condensation in my 2011 Fabia's nearside headlamp and also found that it is loose in its mounting.  Not by much, it just has a little give when you press the uper half of the lamp.  Looking under the bonnet I can see that part of the plastic moulding (where it secures to the car) has broken.  See area circled in red in the attached pics.

I don't think the two are related so my questions are:
1. can I fix the condensation problem easily?
2. how do I fix the broken mounting without shelling out a lot of money for a new unit plus fitting?

Condensation should clear up as lights warm up but if it keeps happening, moisture is getting in too easily. Does your headlights have the black rubber cover over the bulbs still, or is it missing? Could be how moisture gets in as could a crack/chip in the lens, etc.

As for the cracked plastic, a plastic repair cement/epoxy compound may suffice but it will always be a weak spot and may break again.

You may have to apply the cement/epoxy and then press and hold the joint closed for a good 24 hours to set well.

The rubber seal on the back of the headlight bulb should be checked and be in place as this also cause problems like this there might be cold air getting in around the cracked area also causing this issue

Plastic is a real pain to repair but I found a glue on Ebay called Bond-it industrial adhesive high viscosity superglue, and have managed to stick many plastics that "plastic superglue" doesn't

This could be used to get it back together and then you could cover the cracked area in epoxy making a strong joint and perhaps cure the condensation problem

In all honesty Im all for trying to repair things, but often once the seal breaks down, the condensation will always be an issue, common on "Modern" plastic headlights....You will ideally have to remove it to do a "proper" job, even then it can be hit and miss.

and susscessful glueing of most plastics is always hit an miss escpecially on a "stressed" mounting point.

I personally would not waste the time, link below for new headlight, not a lot of money. You can change the headlight pretty easily.

Thanks.  However, I read on another thread that a headlamp swap on my Fabia involves taking off the front bumper and that's not a job I fancy.

It comes off easy to be honest, and to repair the headlight seal properly, you would need the headlight out which is bumper off anyway.,
