Hi-Fi Separates: CD player advice

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a CD player to replace my aging (an dnot very good ) Samsung CD separate. I'd like a silve rne so it matches the DVD player and amp and it must have a remote (I see some dont even have a remote)

It also needs to have digital audio output.

Any suggestions? Budget under

What Hi Fi is your friend....

For value and quality on this budget you wont go far wrong with the Cambridge Azur 540C V2 or better still 640C V2 at £200 & £250 respectively. Both players recieved 5 stars in What Hi-Fi magazine and would give you an enormous improvement over your existing player. Can only be bought from Richer Sounds though. Hope you find what you are looking for, oh and don't forget to spend a little extra cash on upgrading interconnect cables (can make a massive difference to performance).

How about a nice Binatone one? :D

em good suggestions folks but what is this cd player gonna be hooked up to. There may be no point in splashing out £200 odd quid on a descent cd player thats gonna be connected to a cheap amp and/or speakers.

We just bought a NAD C541BEE. Can't remember where it came from, but they can be had for under 200 nicker on the 'net. The only downside is the silver finish, NAD call it Titanium, is very popular and normally out of stock at most places.

Edited to add: It also has optical output and a remote control.

It'll be feeding a Yamaha RXV357 Amp

Yes, What Hi-fi seriously love the Cambridge Azur CD players, and have done for a while now. Stretch to the 640C V2 if you can.

All the Best

I've just bought the Azur 640 V2 amplifier. Sounds very very nice. The CD is the next buy.

Richer Sounds are doing a deal with that amplifier and the 640 CD player, get free speakers! :D Looks like a great system.

I'd be a little wary with What HiFi mag, they seem to offer some partial reviews sometimes :(

Although if you have a AV Yam amp, I'd look at that too. I have an ageing RX-V625 and whilst it's good for AV, it seriously sucks at 2ch stereo. Having said that, maybe the 357 is a better all-rounder amp.

IMHO, the best test you can do is find out a place where you can audition various players, maybe with your existing amp. It's often a case of finding the best match between an amp and a cd player than getting the ultimate cd player to find it produces a sound incompatible with your amp...

If you're after a Sony Phil, I may be able to help ;)

Word of warning with Cambridge Audio, I have a a CD player and a Tuner, both have had multiple visits back to be repaired, and the CD player still kicks up a lot. They sound very good, but built like poo - the Alfa Romeo of the Hi-Fi world maybe. In the same period all my Japanese stuff which is 2 to 3 times as old has never gone wrong.
