ICE - The Basic mods first.

Featured Replies

Hi

Ive had my 02 Octavia vRS for a few weeks now, and im sick of the sound quality, so ive been doing some research on here and i want to upgrade my speakers, this is what i have found out, please correct me if i am wrong:)

HU:

Im keeping the std HU, for now, but 4x50W is good enough.

Speakers:

Fronts are 165/170mm in diameter and approx 53mm deep (what is the max depth you can go to before the speaker hits the window frame thingy), and around 150W is good enough.

Rears are 130mm in diameter and around 120W is good enough (does dual cone make a difference??)

For fronts, ive had a look at http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/Car_Speakers_6_Coaxial.html and there are loads!!! which ones should i choose, price wise i dont want to spend more than £50. For rears, ive had a look at http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/Car_Speakers_5_Coaxial.html and there are again loads!! which ones??? price, no more than £40 i guess?, but cheaper ones will be ok, as long as they sound good!!!

You can leave the std front tweeters as is, but its best to disconnect the rear ones to improve the sound quality.

You should cut the plastic behind the front speakers to give it more bass, (is there an specific design to the cut to reduce the water getting in, ie make the cut over lap with extra tape?) and if you have foam behind the front speakers, remove this to.

Wiring of the front speakers:

On the stock speakers, there are two sets of wires to each speaker (four wires in total) because the tweeter cables "piggyback" off the main speakers. So you conenct them as: drivers side: blues together and used as a positive, passenger side: reds together and used as a positive, and all browns as earth.

Can you clarify this please in more detail, as i cannot find any info on how to connect the wires, what colours the wire are and what sort of clips/connectors i should be using.

For sound deadening, use Aquaseal, although this is for waterproofing homes.

I think thats it for a basic upgrade which should make a big difference (obviously a new HU, Sub and amp etc etc etc would be better, but i dont want to do THAT much, hopefully these mods should be good enough  )

Thanks

Gav

Oh, music wise, i listen to the radio!!!, or CD's of Dance/Trance, or RnB, Urban stuff, so some speakers that could cope with this sort of music would be cool......

changing the headunit would be more benficial as the standard speakers seem better than the standard HU.

have you considered a becker or blaupunkt unit as they are much better quality but still have a factory fit look to them :)

Blaupunkt Woodstock has improved the sound about 300% even with the standard speakers......

First rule is............ rubbish in = rubbish out

have a look on talkaudio.co.uk those guys really know there stuff

oooh, looks good, what the model number, and how much???

I agree - the head unit is definitely the weak link.

Also, unplugging the rear door tweeters will help too.

Here's my Becker. The most factory looking head unit available imho.

:) nice HU to, what model is that one and what colour at night?? did it cost alot?

It wasn't the cheapest, but it sounds great, no blingy bits, has a red LED that blinks when off (security feature), removable face plate, intelligent buttons, AWESOME iPOD interface...:thumbup::thumbup: I think it was

if you was in kynns lynn are was gonna say that ive seen your car, i was up there (im in suffolk) looking at a vrs and a fabia vrs pulled up with a banging stereo and the owner of the garage said it was 175 bhp, wondered if it was you??

oh, thats a bit cheaper, wasnt looking at spending more than £200, but i think a bit of extra overtime and i will get one :)

30W does sound weird!! hehe what speakers would match up well with this HU? and is it pull down front for the CD?

I would have said it was me, if it wasn't for a garage owner saying they knew me... And mine is circa 175bhp too :thumbup:

Yep, the centre part of the front flips down to take CDs.

And any speakers you like mate. Depends on your budget and listening preferences... ;)

Listen to the stereo with the new unit though, the std speakers may just impress.

from the links i put on here, there is a bloody huge choice, i aint got a clue, if you look at my first post, its got the prices and music i listen to, from the website, what would you go for??

it wasnt a garage, as in mechanics, it was a sales place, off A1 or somewhere like that, think that was in there name too, Fabia bloke was with a blonde?? but otherwise, your car spec is the same.

what only 4' date='096 shades!!!!

Hi

Is anyone able to respond to my original questions at the start of page 1?

Cheers

Gav,

I'm also looking at upgrading my Octy II's ICE. I've done a bit of ground work on speaker sizes and how to get the door cards off (see http://www.briskoda.net/forums/ice-security-insurance/how-remove-octy-ii-door-cards-speaker-sizes/51291/ ).

The speakers have their own in-built surrounds so you will need adaptors to space the new speakers off the door panels - 50mm deep up front and 38mm at the back. As I didn't have any pop-rivets at hand, I did not remove the speakers to check what depth is available and if there is any water proofing behind the speaker.

As regards wiring, I would recommend new decent speaker cable direct from the HU to the speakers. I intend to go for components up front and may reuse the Infinity 6500cs I had in my Ocy I - they are 165mm. This will mean replacing the tweeters.

If you are going to disconnect the rear tweeter then either co-ax or dual cones would be the best bet - as they are at floor level the treble will be lost but the rear speakers will fill the sound in. As regards makes, I'd suggest going for a good brand in your price range - spending more on the fronts.
