2009 1.2 HTP Fabia - Doesn't always start first time

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

About 6 months ago I bought a 2009 1.2 HTP Fabia. It's my first car and I absolutely love it! I haven't had any major issues with it. It's had a few things done such as new discs and pads and yesterday my Oil Pressure sensor went! (Skoda quoted me £117 for them to fix it. Bought the part for £7 and did it myself! - No more warning light thankfully!)

The one intermittent issue that I have had ever since getting the car is that sometimes it doesn't start up first time. If it ever doesn't start first time, it is guaranteed to start the second time. However, sometimes it does start first time.

I've had a diagnostics check on the ECU and there's no fault codes at all.

Now I do apologise, as I believe there may be a few other topics around about this - I've had a look and some people have suggested things such as the Battery (My batter voltage is perfectly fine and it functions well so don't think it is that), Fuel Pump (Not too sure? Wouldn't know how to check), and I think someone has even mentioned the fuel pressure regulator?

My local garage have suggested that they think it is the Throttle Body. Something to do with it not being set right when starting the car (?) - They suggested cleaning it or maybe replacing it but apparently they aren't covered to do it.

I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on what it could be? My car runs perfectly apart from this intermittent issue. It's not a major problem, but it would be nice if the car started first time every time. It's sometimes quite embarrassing when it doesn't!

TIA for any help. With it being my first car, I am slowly learning different things... It was only today that I learnt how to replace the Oil Pressure Switch and I'm quite proud of that!

Thanks,

Lewis.

Any suggestions?

If the plugs are clean and gapped correctly and the air/oil filter's all new, I'd just keep driving it.

Glad I've got a reply! Haha.

Yeah, air & oil filters are new & plugs are clean and gapped right afaik.

I've been driving and there's no issues at all - Just wondered if anyone knew what could be causing it that's all :)

I shall keep driving as normal and hopefully one day I'll work it out haha

Hopefully all will be good. I've seen many instanced where owners say their car is a pain to start from cold or even when warm. Not Skoda's, just cars through the years. If they start second go, as long as you are not trying for too long the first go, allow a few seconds to try again and then start second try, I would not lose too many  Zzz's over it!😴

Always starts second time and first time I only turn it over for a few seconds. I wont lose much sleep over it, at the end of the day, it can't be anything too serious! Just hope it doesn't end up in a state where it doesn't start at all. Thanks for your reply :D

Update!

The other day I decided to see if the key is the issue. I've been using my spare key and it's started up first time every time.

I'm either getting very lucky or it's the key that was causing the issue.

I'll let you know if it starts doing it again at some point.

Just a quick question, where is your right foot when your starting? Mine starts first time every time as long as I'm not pressing the accelerator. If I press it at all then sometimes it will not start first time. Just a thought. Nice little cars though!

I always make sure I'm not pressing the accelerator etc when starting. When I took it to my local garage they said that it started first time every time when they did apply slight acceleration which made them think it was the throttle body causing issues.

Ever since using the spare key though, No issues at all! I'm hoping it doesn't do it anymore but that's a matter of time I guess.

Update -

It was too good to be true!! It still does it. I must've just been getting extremely lucky with it.

I'm not sure if this matters / is normal, but one thing I've noticed is that when I turn the key once, obviously the fuel pump primes and I can hear that, and then when I try to start the car, if it fails to start and I stop, I hear the fuel pump prime again. Should that happen again? Could it be a sign of a bad fuel pump?

Not any help, but maybe someone knows the answer.

Is it just the TSI's that primes the fuel when the drivers door is opened after the car has sat awhile, or does this happen as well with a 1.2 HTP ?

I can hear the pump priming in my HTP as soon as I open the drivers door.
