Downsizing alloy wheels, offset question - Superb 2012

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've just collected a Superb Elegance estate with the standard 18" wheels that need a refurb. However I would like to improve the ride comfort and swap to Cross Climate's so considered dropping down to 16" 7J wheel and 205/55/16 tyre as fitted to the entry level cars.

My question is what offset do I need? as I assume it would different to the standard 18" wheels & the alloy wheel websites are a little vague so exact spec would be helpful just to cross reference.

Many Thanks

Chris

Pretty sure the standard sizes for a Superb would be:

- 16" 7J ET45

- 17" 7J ET49

- 17" 7.5J ET49

- 18" 7.5J ET46

All with a 5x112 PCD and a 57.1mm centre bore.

A 6.5" wide rim is the usual width that car manufacturers use for the 205/55R16 tyre size.

This 6.5Jx16 ET46 rim that the latest Skoda Octavia uses would work well.

Also consider 6.5Jx17 ET38 rims fitted with 205/50R17 tyres. However, this is a more expensive tyre size and slightly less comfortable than the 205/55R16 tyre size.

If you compare this to the 7.5Jx18 ET49 rim fitted with a 225/40R18 tyre, then the edge of the tread of a 205/50R17 tyre will be in a similar position in relation to the edge of the wheelarch, ie. a similar fit. However, using a 38mm offset instead of a 49mm offset will result in a 22mm wider track.

The Skoda Superb is meant to be a comfort car, so low profile 225/40R18 tyres just don't make sense at all.

Also, those Alcar hybridrad steel rims look nice.
