Cycle Insurance Suggestions

Featured Replies

It would appear gone are the days you bought a bike and just went out and rode it.

Having recently splashed the cash on my first proper new bike in over 30 years, Specialized Rockhopper Comp, and as it will be stored in a shed I'm looking for 'all round insurance' that covers me as well as the bike.

I found a section in the MSE Website which has provided a few options, but as always, it is better to see what othe peoples experiences have been like.

Many thanks,

Fin

After getting knocked off my bike last year I started looking at insurance,

British cycling advise the use of cycle plan. I decided against it as I dont have have an expensive bike and I only use it once or twice a week.

I claimed for damages to my bike directly with the driver insurance company and whilst doing so they requested that I made a personal injury claim against them.......

I have my bikes insured on my home insurance, it was very flexible in being able to insure them at home and when away from home (stipulations apply), I myself am covered when cycling through my membership with British Cycling or We Are Cycling UK.

Also consider some visual markings on your bike and adding it to a Bike Database such as this one BikeRegister

If you are going to go down the route of GPS tracking your rides make sure you start/finish them away from your home, some apps allow you to create a hidden zone, I highly recommend doing this.

At the moment I am looking at cover external to my home insurance to assess what mark up, if any, my insurer will add.  I'm also wary about claiming for the loss of a bike on my house insurance in case it adds a large increase on my premium.  I made an unsuccessful claim for a large leak in my house, and even though my insurer did not pay anything towards repairing the damage, my premium initially went up by quite a sum for just making the claim, until I threw my toys out at them.

My home insurance covers theft and accidental damage. Worth calling your provider.

Thanks all for your responses.

Due to other priorities at the moment, Bike Insurance has dropped off my radar for the foreseeable future.  The 'chain' to place my bike in the shed is worse than house selling!
