1.0 TSI 115bhp engine noise caused by fuel?

Featured Replies

Can bad fuel cause weird noises from the engine?

So I got my Scala 1.0 TSI 115bhp and after a few days from getting it delivered I started noticing a weird rattling noise when driving in 2nd gear slowly in for example parking garages, if I speed up just abit it stopped.

I rang the dealer and the talked to the mechanics and they said the TSI can sound weird sometimes... well my mate was just gonna have he's delivered so I thought I would just try hes and see if it was normal.

He's car arrived and it had no issues at all,  no rattling noise at all and on mine it was easily replicated but was not able to do it even one time on hes.

I called the dealer and they asked me to come in and they said they would take a look and fix anything that was needed for free since it was a new car.

Anyhow I looked around the engine compartment to see if anything was loose on mine,  found nothing.

Just by coincidence I was low on fuel so we went to fill up,  took the normal 95 just like before but now the  rattling sound was gone!  We both had filled with 95 octane gasoline originally and thats what I filled up with now also.

I'm thinking could the fuel I originally filled my car with have been just a bad batch or something?  maybe something with the mixture?  After filling up again I havnt been able to replicate the problem so far.

Now it runs perfect,  exactly like my mates identical car

Should I still have they check it?  They are quite far away so thats why I am giving it a shot to ask here if anybody knows or had the same issues

"the TSI can sound a bit weird sometimes"

And

"checking your car for free because it's new"

********* (cant type what I really think)

I really hope that isn't the Skoda dealer I bought my cars from.

I suspect there was a bit of pinking going on here with the original post which has gone away with better petrol (my earlier tsi can pink with some cheap petrol especially French supermarket 95 RON stuff).

The TSI's can sound a bit weird - the direct injection itself can be a bit "rattly" but you normally can't hear this inside the car because of the soundproofing.

Also just after starting you can get a few noises from the direct injection, secondary air injection pumps etc - depending on conditions / temperature. The idea is to get the emissions controls active and the engine warmed up as quickly as possible. Before the exhaust is warmed through you can also hear a strange noise from the exhaust as the tsi initially generates a lot of water vapour that condenses on the cold exhaust.

I can honestly say the 1.0 in my car has never sounded remotely weird.

The 1.2 TSi (4 cylinder rather than 3) was sometimes a bit rattly on a cold start after a being parked for several days or weeks, but the 1.0 triple has never given any audible concerns - at last you've identified something about it I cannot complain about.

My 1.0 tsi 115 sometimes makes a rattly growl when cold

Much quieter when run on 98 ron petrol

It has not made as much noise it since I had it serviced about 10000 miles and said put it on fixed services, not sure if this a different type of oil, or something in the software that slightly changes valve settings etc

My wife has a Rapid Spaceback 1.0tsi which runs on normal 95 Ron octane fuel.

I run a Toledo 1.0tsi which runs on 99 Ron octane and mine is noticeably quieter or my wife's is noticeably louder/rattly.

Try the better fuel!

@SurreyJohn

What do you run is it 97 ron min or 99 ron min as no retailers in the UK have 98 ron Super unleaded on sale?

Nice Winter Formulation 95 ron or Super unleaded  now being distributed to UK Filling stations.

Maybe not yet down south though.

I own a toledo 1.0 and drove a rapid 1.0 recently. The rapid had  no underbonnet soundproofing!

That would explain a lot... I will check it out!
