Rear Wiper Woes

Featured Replies

Picked up my Yeti a couple of weeks ago but it has become apparent that it has an issue with the rear screen wiper.  Initially it would stick repeatedly rather than wipe smoothly.  Having seen earlier posts suggesting that this is not an uncommon problem with cars built around the same time, I booked it in for a replacement wiper motor next week.  Fortunately, as the car is an approved used Skoda  it shouldn’t cost me anything other than time.

However, making a longer trip in near monsoon conditions the other day the wiper decided to start working correctly, that is until I tried to turn it off!  It will not, unless the ignition is also off, very annoying, so I have had to spring back the wiper so it does not continually wipe a dry screen.  Yes the front wiper switch is in the off position and I have also disabled auto wipe in the MFD to no effect.  I assume I do still need a new wiper motor unless anyone has any other ideas as to the cause of the problem?

..known fault with wiper motor....had  exactly the same problem after I got mine from a Skoda dealer. Booked it in to a "local" main dealer and they fixed it for free under warranty and its been fine since. They should be aware of this issue, it is a well documented problem...

The rear screen washer feed runs through the wiper motor.

When it leaks it plays havoc with the motor.

Unfortunately the replacement, under the same conditions, is likely go the same way eventually.

Many thanks.  Seems like a rather perverse piece of design, hopefully the replacement will last longer than the 3.5 years of the original!

Sounds like they could still be using a similar design to the one that failed in my 2002 Passat....the washer fluid passes through a central metal tube which eventually breaks internally.

Back then an early symptom of impending failure was that the water jet wouldn't completely rotate in time/sync with the wiper arm.

It was such a frequent failure, VW sold a repair kit that contained a replacement metal tube and few other bits, was cheaper than a new motor but you'd hope they'd improve the design to stop it happening...

Even more perversely, this morning, after a full week of refusing to turn off it is now working normally!!  I hope the supplying dealer can still be pursuaded to replace it when I take it in next week.

I’ve had my 09 Yeti since 2014 this issue is only occurring now when you look at the forums they nearly all say it’s the Rear Wiper switch contacts which would need the whole stalk replacing as it’s a sealed unit.

Luckily I had the same issue on my 18 year old Octavia which turned out to be the wiper motor wash tube leaking which drives its electrics to do random things.

It’s a clever design that on both cars had worked for over 10 years so a new motor is a simple answer ensuring the water connections are sound and leakproof when done. In most cases these will go for many years with no issues I’ve also replaced the very confused relay which I probably didn’t need to but for £9 it just seems sensible. No drama as it’s all easily sorted.
