Octy II Idle Rattle/ engine stop light.!!

Featured Replies

Hery Guys, any help or advice will be much appreciated.

53 plate Octy II, 2.0tdi, 112k, engine code BKD, regularly serviced.  About 4-5k ago I got a rattling noise on idle but obviously not noticable otherwise.  I posted on here a good while ago for any advice (don't use the car that often) and the concensus was a blocked sump pick up filter pipe.

It didnt seem to bother the running of the car but one day the 'Engine Stop' warning light came on so I stopped immediately.  As I was near home I left it 5 mins, started up and drove home without any warning light lit or any other issue.  I got it in to a mechanic and told him about the advice from the forum, he took the sump off and told me that the pick up pipe was 'slightly' blocked but in his opinion not enough to block it to any detrimental flow.  He told me he cleaned it, changed the oil and oil filter and gave it a boot up to 70mph and all was fine.

That was roughly 6 months ago but two days ago after roughly 500 miles from the previous mechanics intervention the 'engine stop' warning light has appeared again.  It can appear after cold and driving 3 miles or not again for many miles but the rattling is present again.  Could this still be the pick up pipe or the oil pump itself?  Would the 'engine stop' warning appear on a check of the EMU?

Any ideas please guys?

Many thanks.

Thanks J.R.

but isn't that just going to show low oil pressure not the individual cause?  I am leaning towards a likelihood that it is either the oil pressure switch or oil pump, what do you think?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
