Jerking on heavy throttle

Featured Replies

Hi all. I've had my fabia vrs mk2 since August and have done 2k miles in it so far. It's the 7 speed dsg box for those who don't know.

Today the road opened up and I put down a lot of throttle to overtake someone - probably a bit too heavy and heavier than usual - and the car jolted and lost power for probably less than a second before returning to the right gear and giving me the power to overtake. No lights on the dash or unusual smells (except from me!) and not had this issue before.

It feels as if maybe I caught the gearbox out and it chose to shift down when it was expecting to go up next (I believe it prepares the next gear it expects to need based on your driving); I had not slowed or braked or sped up before applying the throttle so my speed was pretty consistent.

I am hoping it's not a sign of woes to come. I do have a warranty on it plus I bought another 2 years on top because of what I've read on here about the dq200 gearbox.

Mine is a cthe engine on a 13 plate with 47k miles, full history and a sticker for the 34h5 campaign in the boot.

Any advice appreciated

Before checking out the gearbox, not that you can check the engine.

Have it ready to see if any fault codes logged.

If there does happen to be a DSG issue, Skoda can not wipe their hands of it,

'34H5' was a software update, find out when carried out, was it in 2017 or 2018.

is there a date on the sticker.  It was done as a preventative action, it did not always work.

That means Fundamental fault, which Skoda / VW know about and when they introduced this Service Campaign

it was to try to stop failures / leaks..

So Full History,

does that show the spark plugs changed once or twice, or changed recently?

There is a TPI for the Timing Chain, and a Software update, but first check the Service History / invoices.

So you floored it, Kick down came into effect and it dropped to the correct gear? This is a natural effect with a DSG  box referred to as "kick down" it will drop the gears necessary and take possibly 0.5 of a second to get back on the throttle.

I wouldn't worry unless it was kangarooing, Kick down isn't always great for the gearbox essentially but the more aggressive  you are with the pedal the worse it will be.

My tip is if over taking, do it manually.

Or as i do, double kickdown if you want a shift on,

make sure all is well though if it is your car, or it is a car you have out for a test drive to see just how well it does.

The gearboxes are great, only crap ones are the ones that need treated like sugar.

Thanks both.

It has full service stamps but only one receipt - for a new turbo last year at 33k miles and a service. I don't have the paperwork with me but from memory the spark plugs were done then.

34h5 was done 2017.

I'll keep an eye on it and I'm not in the habit of booting it hence it not happening before for me. My last car was a 1.6 Hyundai Matrix petrol people carrier with a 0-60 of double this car and kickdown felt a bit different in that!

Yep, flick the paddles and awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay you go !!!..............

Left hand on shifter for the older generation that were pre Playstation, and down a gear or 3 knowing that the gears are dropped.

or down one and still kickdown as needed if something is still on your jacksy.

Choices with twinchargers and a DQ200.

@Blockhead

Best assume nothing with Skoda Main Dealer Servicing.

You want to see Warranty & Service Records and Invoices, if you do not know when the spark plugs were changed then change them.

At least they need looked at and if doing that put in good plugs.

13,000 miles since the Turbo change and maybe the new plugs fitted and it could be time for new ones.

Be aware that at some point the Water Pump / Supercharger Magnetic clutch, 2 belts might need replacing.

Thanks @Roottootemoot. I will look into the spark plugs. From another thread you linked to I believe Denso plugs came recommended? I could ask the dealer to use them specifically.

Is the magnetic clutch a separate thing to the two dry clutches it has? Forgive my ignorance on the engineering side of things. UPDATE: having read some of your other posts it looks like it is different - it engages the supercharger.

I imagine it'd be a few Bob if it does need doing - an old quote of yours said under £500? I'm keen to look after the car and keep it for a few years so I'll take it in soon and see what they say.

I bought it from an MG dealer so imagine I'd be best taking it there as I have a warranty through them. I imagine spark plugs, water pump and supercharger clutch would be consumable and so not covered under warranty but if I go elsewhere I don't want them arguing the chosen garage isn't doing work to manufacturer standard and therefore invalidate any future warranty claims on other potential issues.

The water pump and belts are all it would need, clutch part of that. Nothing to do the the DSG.   As to Denso plugs some main dealers and techs will be OK with you supplying them, some will say wrong plugs. Yet AUDI master techs might well fit only them.

Re water pump, when failed and a warranty some master techs support the customer with premature failure and a warranty claim, some say not covered by warranty.  Same when it comes to dsg, s.  Clutches consumables, mcu / mechatronic unit is a fail and warranty item. Depends on who. Where or if they got laid maybe.
