Fabia MK2 misfire on cylinder 4

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m new to the group. I’ve recently purchased a Fabia estate VRS 2011 at 82k miles. Within the first week of having it I noticed it wasn’t pulling away properly and was very juddery when sat idle. Subsequently the engine management light came on and I took it to a friends garage. He informed me that it was registering a fault as a misfire in cylinder 4 and that I should take it back to the trader I bought it from.

sent back to the trader under warranty and had the coil replaced and all 4 spark plugs. However, when I got it back the light came back on within an hour of having the car. I got the RAC out this time who said it was again misfire on coil 4. We looked in the engine and the garage had changed coil 1 not 4 😞

ive subsequently got the 4th coil changed but the light is still coming on.

i took it in to a garage today to get serviced and MOT and by some miracle it passed the test. However, they found that the spark plug for coil 4 was covered in oil. The 2 mechanics have a difference of opinion with one thinking the turbo is shot (it doesn’t pull away anymore and is basically in limp mode as if the turbo were switched off) and the other thinking it could be gaskit as only one spark plug is getting oil

ive seen seen a few threads regards misfire but can’t find anything this specific. Anybody shed any light?

Welcome.

So quite likely the valves are gone or the piston rings.

Look at the top of the page and pinned threads, oil burners, lucifers ultimated guide etc.

Hi, thanks for your swift reply 😀

How do you know if it’s a pinned thread? I can’t see any with valves in the title?

Do you know if it’s a common fault and easy to repair?

Im having a bit of back and forth with the dealer who sold it to me and potentially going to just give the car back but would prefer to keep it as it’s a nice car and when it’s running correctly it’s awesome to drive.

Bit of a conflict there, if the turbo is "shot" as suggested then you would get loads of blue and whiteish smoke when pulling away and when pushing revs up, sometimes the vanes get stuck on these turbos and need a mr muscle clean not do much on petrol version though,  oiling plugs can point  to worn valve stems and seals  but again usually blue smoke when idling and pulling off, rings on that cylinder might be broken allowing oil to pass into chamber but again usually blue smoke, a friend had an issue with the injector wiring loom on one cylinder which shut off the fuel supply then it returned causing misfire and management light problems and plug fouling

I have also seem a cracked cylinder head on one chamber but usually this causes a slow water loss over a week or so with some coloured smoke from exhaust when warmed up

Try a compression test on said cylinder, try the other cylinders and check results, if 4 is different squirt a small amount of thin oil into cylinder and try again if the same result could be issue with valves/head gasket , if it a lot more could be issue with rings or the piston

Hope you get to the problem  good luck

Compression Test a Must in case of damage, reject car if it is down on any cylinder.

Oil spray pattern mean you likely need the oil jet fixes as well, (if you have it long enough to realise it is burning oil)
