I’ll move this to the correct section but you basically need to pay a dealer for them to activate it.

As above, dealer visit. It’s doable outside the dealer but it costs the same or more, best to just have them do it.

On topic but different car...! We have a 65 reg Beetle which displays the same (Appconnect instead of Smartlink but ultimately the same system I'm sure).

A dealer attempted to activate it but ended up stating it can't be done. Has anyone experienced this before even when the Appconnect or Smartlink menu option is available?

The VW dealer wanted £250 for successful completion of the work by the way!

It's highly overrated and overpriced for what it is.

It should only be around £150 which is pretty good value to permanently enable AndroidAuto and Apple Carplay. Of course if you have no intention to use these systems then it's not good value but presumably @Lovepreet is expecting to actually use them.

It's especially good value when you compare to a manufacturer like BMW who are now charging £85 per year (or £295 permanent) for just Carplay.

AndroidAuto was already active on my car and it could be a causal factor of my infotainment system crashing.

Phone is a Galaxy S8+, with latest updates and latest versions of the app(s).

Just waiting for a decent phone to replace it. (NOT AN iPhone) spit spit.

I personally wouldn't do without AA now. Very rarely have the standard system display on.

The new AA version is simply perfect. I'm a long time iPhone user :) but for Apple Car play just sucks compared to AA.

Now that AA opens Spotify and any navigation automatically ...

I have a separate Android phone in the glove box just to AA experience :D
