Spare wheel

Featured Replies

Had a puncture the other day and noticed that the spare wheel was a 16" job while the wheels on the car are 17".

Its been bugging me now if this is right. I know most spares are space savers but I thought the spase was saved by using a narrower tyre not one with a different hight.

Can anyone confirm its the correct size before I mug myself up going to the dealer:rofl:

Cheers.

I haven't looked at the spare on my vRS yet but it's not uncommon for space savers to be a smaller diameter than the standard fitted wheel. I saw a toyota Yaris nearly toppling over as it went round a corner on its space saver spare at the weekend.

Can't vouch for the Skoda (don't have one - just thinking about it) but it's not uncommon for the spare to be a totally different "size" but with the same rolling diameter. My old vectra had 205/55R16 alloys, but the spare was something like a 195 on a 15" steel.

Cheap for the manufacturer - one size fits all!

Yup, that's what I got in the boot, quite normal!.

I understand space savers are smaller but if the wheel I have is the correct size then its not saving that much space being a 205 16 when the wheels on the car are 225 17, in fact the hole in the boot looks like it will hold a 17 quite easy

May just be a cost saving exercise.

They use '50' profile tyres rather than '45' on your 17's so that the RR diamater is the same.

Mine are 45

Mine are 45

Sorry, my mistake 50 on 16's and 45 on 17's!

Its done to save money, A 16" steel wheel and tyre are much cheaper than a 17" alloy and low profile tyre.

I dont expect an alloy but it would be nice to have the right size tyre.

IIRC the fabia vrs has a spare which is the same size, I remember taking it off the steel rim and fitting it to one of the alloys.

That was one of the reasons I stayed with stock wheels, I fancied the 17" but with the 16" Steel Spare and additional tyre costs for 17" and not being able to rotate the spare I stayed with the 16" Wheels at least with them you get 5 alloys.

Elegance comes with 5 same size alloys as standard.

Would that be 17" alloys?

I had an Elegance before this sport and it also had a steel spare but it was wearing 17" peg alloys again.

Frankly it doesn't really matter providing the spare is of a simlar rolling circumference as the main wheels/tyres considering the ammount of time it is ever likely to be used.

The only downside I can see is not being able to rotate wheels for even wear and tear, but I dont know many people nowadays that actually do that.

Would agree, my spare however is the old passenger rear as it got a puncture at 8K miles and was repaired and is now the spare with the original brand new spare being able to be used in it's place.

nah, just 16's

My policy is to buy one new tyre when the original fronts need replaced, also fit the spare to the front and best worn tyre goes to spare. Therafter change in pairs. After all, when it comes to trade in time there is no value in a nice new spare in the boot.

I agree.

Wish I could do that

Yup! That's my approach unless I don't like the original tyres in which case I change in pairs, moving rears to the front at first change to achieve a full change as quick as poss.

perhaps someone with more knowledge than i can clear this up.......

is it not technically illegal to have diffrent sized tires on an axel???

the reason i raise this point, a garage once refused to MOT my mates car as it had diffrent size wheels on the rear due to a mis-timed flat.:thumbdwn:

personally i think the cost cutting point is very valid, but it will also force us to go out and buy a nice new (expensive) tyre to match the ones fitted as original equipment. this is because there is nothing worse than seeing a car with 3 alloys and one steel wheel!! (well, badly fitted boy racer boydy kits with primer and filler on display are worse, but you get my point, i hope)

I just noticed yesterday, that apart from the fact I've got a steel spare wheel -- its running a different brand tyre altogether !!!

Wheels on the car Continental Conti Sport 2 -- spare wheel - Dunlop SP ???

Surely that's not right -- I dont really mind about the size issue - but I would have expected at least the same bloody make

How much is a single vRS Zenith 17" wheel? Or if they are in a set can 4 vRS owner club together and get one each? I'm thinking £100-£200 per wheel + £150 for the tyre (mine can with 225/45/R17 W RE050 Bridgestone Potenzas. Also can anyone tell me if these tyres are run flat as the Web sites seem to theink so????
