Few Issues....

Featured Replies

Morning All,

You may remember my other thread here https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/473398-mk1-octavia-19tdi-169k-am-i-mad/

So I'm 1.5 weeks into my ownership now of the car and overall I'm quite pleased with my purchase. There is though, a few small issues I'd like to mention/ask advice on please.

1. When I first got the car, the glow plug light starting flashing (only stayed on for 10 minutes) and after a quick search on here, led me to the brake light switch. I ordered a new one, went to fit it and realised ECP had given me the wrong one, so that got returned. Over the 400 miles I have done since then, it hasn't returned until this morning - when it starting flashing after 5 minutes from starting the engine (note it was quite cold this morning). Again the light remained for around 5 minutes before going off. Just as I came to end of my 40 mile journey, it came on again for a brief two minutes and back off. The car starts as soon as I turn the key too everytime.

During this time the car is driving spot on, I can't see anything wrong - so is there anything else this could be? I don't want to buy VAGCOM or pay for diagnostics so what are the common things as such?

2. When starting the car in the morning, the engine seems relatively quiet if you like for a diesel but as it gets to full temp - it seems a bit noisy - bit like when you floor it like exhaust could be blowing - is that normal?

3. When foot down hard, you hit around 3k RPM and the turbo whistles - anything to worry about? I did think this and no2 could be a small boost leak or something

4. When the car is cold, the gearbox is fine but when warm - I struggle to engage 3rd sometimes. Am I right in thinking this could be merely an oil change needed? It doesn't crunch - just hard to engage.

Overall, I'm quite pleased and expected more issues than this, but I'd like to sort these out if I can do.

Thanks

Luke

No3 and maybe 2 - go looking for split pipes, or hoses, when warm too, as it might opening up as it heats up.

No.4 - probably a linkage adjustment needed. Theres a thread about how to do it.

No1 - id still suspect the brake switch. When they start failing it can intermittent.

Also, you can buy a BT  ELM dongle for like 30quid on ebay, and either Carista or TorquePro will do the fault scanning you need.

Torquepro less than a fiver on app store

Clean the turbo out with Mr Muscle. There's a big thread on here all about it. Certainly cured my whistle, but is worth doing anyway!

You were right about the brake light switch, it failed this morning!!

So mad dash to a garage nearby, they got me one at cost.

To install - is it pedal down, put in and turn 90 degrees then plug in, release pedal?
