Octavia SDI - Engine Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hoping somebody can help me out here - My Octavia SDI seem to be using a lot of oil - around 1 litre every 500 miles. The odd thing is that there is no smoke, no loss of power, and the mpg is exactly as it should be. Does anybody know what could be causing this with the lack of any symptoms?

Two possibilities in my head, One easy to fix, the other is Houston we have a.......:-

  1. PCV valve / oil breather system failing causing crankcase pressure that blows oil past anything including valve seals - causing oil burning. Easy fix!!
  2. The SDI can suffer bore wash if the injectors have done high mileage as the injector spray mist becomes more of a spray and diesel is not a great lubricant so the bores wear quickly on the fire side of the stroke

As you have no loss of power or economy fingers crossed re no 1

PS on my petrol mk1 1.4 I had oil breather issues a few years ago that caused rapid oil consumption - fixed and it's been ok since

Okay thanks, I'll look into the PCV issue. Car has plenty of go still (for an SDI) and the mpg is right at 52/53 on a mixed drive. Fingers crossed at least!
