inside of the locking wheel nut broke

Featured Replies

hi guys,

hope everyone is ok.

having a right nightmare with this locking wheel nut, it happened few weeks ago when i was replacing the dust covers for the font. i did the left one but when i went to do the right one, the whole inside of the key snapped right off and left me with just 2 on the wheel nut so i tried to loosen that one when my new key turned up and now the 2 bits have come off 😞

i tried using a 22mm socket to wedge the wheel nut inside it so i can turn it but no joy.

anyone got any ideas please?

many thanks guys

I'm not sure I follow what's happened. Could you post a picture?

What about trying to pound on a large socket over the whole head of the wheel bolt (it may not be possible as it may not fit into the alloy wheel recess) have used this technique successfully in the past but it is very much subject to the type of wheel bolt you have.

Worst case you may have to drill off the head of the bolt to allow removal of the wheel and then use an easy-out to remove the remaining piece of the wheel bolt.

this is my locking key

the pattern inside my wheel nut has come off so there is nothing stopping it from moving.

i am trying to find out what size socket i need as the 22mm seemed bit too small so i figure i might need 23 or 24.

Take it to a garage

Most now have locking wheel nut removal tools for this purpose as hammering a 22mm 12 sided socket on to these sometimes works sometimes doesn't
Heres a video

The removal tool is tapered and grips the outer edges

You can buy cheep ones from halfords for about £20 but if the bolt is on tight its best going to a garage as they have Snap on quality stuff

same happened to me.

i took it to a garage, and they used my damaged pattern socket, but with a strong impact gun, it came out instantly.
