Lost 100mi range

Featured Replies

Hellooo

1.6tdi 2013 90k fixed with remap done 2yrs ago. last serviced at 86k

99% driven on motorways only. In fact it's a rule in our hiuse that the Skoda is only used on long journeys 20+ miles.

so something unexplained has happened. Basically overn the last month I have lost 100miles in range. I do about 330mi to the thank where I used to do 450-500 easilly. I mean the Maxidot still says i'm doing 60mpg which is bo***ks because the figgures don't add up. And I also know the varriance in temeprature outside gives you more or less milles, I have read those forums where they argue for pages and pages...

Issues:

- no issues

Things i checked:

- tyre pressure

- seized breakes

- smoke. none whatsoever. i drove behind it for 40mi

- oil is spot on evrey week

- no leaks

- no power loss that i can feel

- no error codes

- i have refilled at different pumps with premium diesel.

- i use VAGDPF and it does the normal regens every 250-300mi

- no iddling issues

It just drinks more and I don't know why.

Can the Tripplx oil have been the issue? it was still the 507 00 5w-30 spec

Why? Why? WHYYYY?????!!!!!

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

at the service, was the air filter changed too? This can have some impact though to drop it drastically as that is doubtful. I could suggest three things that could add to that loss. (Accepting the tyres are inflated as you stated).

Air filter, losing say, ten percent, air-con on, losing ten to fifteen percent and the addition of a roof rack, again a similar loss. Can you rule those things out, too?

Have you changed tyres recently? That may too, make some difference.

Is it leaking fuel? Either whilst the engine is running (ie under pressure, may not be so obvious) or leaking elsewhere not under pressure (ie potential puddle of fuel on the ground).

I have a K&N filter for about 2 years and cleaned it regualrly, having said that, i haven't checked the past couple of days to see if it's blocked. So i need to check

No roof rack, all tyres spot on and they haven't been changed recently (6 months old) and aircon never made much difference even during summer when it was hot. We have it off because....you know, cold weather and that.

i've been sniffind the engine bay, i was under it with a torch. It's dry and clean.

My first thoughts was a boost leak, and i was expecting a hose issue somewhere, again...it all looks dry

Further to the fuel leak, perhaps try leaving the car idling on a clean dry surface with plastic engine undertray removed to see if any accumulation of fuel anywhere. Clutching at straws really, the extra fuel must be going somewhere.

I presume you are typically putting in the usual quantities of fuel and not less?

Or maybe a bad wheel bearing causing extra drag, although you would expect to hear a rough bearing.

Another possible could be rad thermostat or associated parts not functioning properly, if the engine thinks its cold it will be running less efficiently in an excess fueling mode for cold climate causing increased fuel consumption.

i'll check again just in case maybe i missed something you never know. Currently it's gone for a 200mi journey and it will be back tomorrow night. Tank been refilled to the top this morning and trip reset.

again, no bearing noises. I had the car up on jack stands and I've checked for breake binding, the wheels span with no issues.

I had the car for 5 years and i never had this descrapancy during winter.

Yep sounds like a strange one indeed...

A duff thermostat's the only other thing I can thing of really causing the engine to run inefficiently. Does the temp gauge take awhile to come up?

thermostat creeps up to 90 as normal, sometimes i monitor stuff like boost and temp on the torque app and no issues

Had something the same on our 1.9 TDI massive drop in fuel to miles ratio, changed filters etc still no joy, tried dealers etc still no joy, had a talk with a mate and he suggested changing fuel sensor not sure on the 1.6 but ours was located on the right hand side of the engine looking from the front near the head and had a yellow plug. it looks like the sensor monitors the fuel going into the injectors and is linked to the management system but after changing this part we noticed that mileage per fill up improved greatly, might be worth a try

thank you. You Know what, I have heard that before and I'm inclined to change it.

So update:

I've now done 300mi and used less than half a tank, which is much better than before having a this issue. I've ordered a new fuel pressure sensor to see if it makes any changes, but for now, I'm closing the bonnet gently and leaving it alone for now.
