Driving a puddle

Featured Replies

Discovered a puddle under the spare wheel today....

The car does sometimes leak at the front so I'm not sure if there was a poor repair or maybe the seals are old?

Anyway, my question is would it be ok to drill a little hole at the lowest point of the spare wheel well, assuming that there's nothing below? Would it be worth putting some glue around the edges to stop the hole then rusting?  The car is ten years old and I'm not too worried about the solution lasting another ten years!

Thanks,

Mark

Saloon or estate?  If saloon, there's a known issue with water running into the boot from the seal when the hatch is opened and it's wet.  Various cures have been recommended so I'd suggest a forum search to learn more.

If estate, the only issue I know of is leakage of screenwash fluid into the luggage space from either a leaky hose or a failing wiper motor,  Again, various threads on the forum about this.

I'd counsel against just drilling a hole as a drain because such a drain can and will allow water in from below whilst driving, thus defeating the purpose of the drain.  There are some existing holes in the wheel well which are sealed with bungs so if you need to drain (as opposed to mop out) you could perhaps temporarily remove one of those.

Water ingress around the boot area is a free of charge feature that Skoda gave owners whether they wanted it or not!

There are a few possible causes:

1) Boot seal. With the boot open squeeze the rubber seal at its lowest point, is it full of water? If water squirts out of the drain holes then you'll need to add some extra holes to allow it to drain. When you slam the boot lid the water is squeezed out of the seal and into the boot.

2) Estate or hatchback? The feed to the rear wash wipe is weak, as are the several plastic push-fit joints that run around the side of the boot. Is the rear wash wipe still operational? If not then chances are you're filling the boot with screen wash.

3) Rear light cluster seals. These can perish and allow water to enter the boot between the back of the lights and the body.

Rather than drilling holes in the floor (water will enter through the hole as much as it will be able to escape through it), then you're better finding the source of the water ingress and fix the cause rather than the symptom.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for slow response.

It's a hatch, and the rear squirter has never worked so it's probably that! The boot seal was not damp when I checked.
