1.9 TDi engines.

Featured Replies

So I had a slight whistle started on my Octavia a few days ago. It is a 105 BXE and today the turbo went. Not sure on the damage yet but it sucked all the oil out and the smokescreen was huge.

My question is before I start ripping it apart are there other options on higher powered PD engine that will just drop straight in.

Such as Golf/Bora or MK1 Octavia PD130 engines. Would the wiring plug and play. Will the flywheel and clutch fit as I had a new Single mass fitted a couple of months ago.

Or should I just swap like for like.

Cheers.

Has your current engine died ?- may just be the turbo that has failed. The smokescreen is from the oil injected via the failed turbo bearings/seals

PS don't forget intercooler - can be full of oil and - stuff after a turbo failure.

Cheers Bigjohn I havnt had time to strip it yet but yes loads of oil in the intercooler and no doubt the cat and exhaust.

Just looking at a worst case scenario as might be cheaper to buy a complete car and just swap motors but upgrade at the same time.

The bxe is one of the later 1.9 engines - and no doubt there will be some extra electronics/sensors which MAY complicate a swap to a different power engine. I leave this for others to comment on as the last time I fitted a different sized engine in a car was some time ago!  Don't forget eventually you'll need to pass an MOT which is catching a few out these day.

Saying that the later bxe has been known to self destruct (conrod failure) and there have been posts of people transposing parts over to and older design but more robust 1.9pd. Think most are OK though.

Cheers bud. The engine size is the same and I am sure the same block but not sure on the rest.👍

Most of the difference comes down to ancillaries and mapping.

Eg in a mk1 the difference between a old non pd 90bhp ALH 1.9 and a non pd 110bhp is bigger injectors and a slightly altered fueling rate to allow for the injectors.

Though some have VNT turbos and others wastegate...

There is some rework to do on the crankshaft sensor if you want to run an older PD in the Octavia 2. It is possible as quite a few owners fit the PD130 into the VW Caddy as an upgrade.

Thanks for the info I was just looking at options if the engine is toast. The garage are picking it up this morning so will see what they say later. I would do myself but wrong time of year to be doing it on the drive for me and needs to be done a bit quick than I have free at the moment.

Hopefully will just be able to get the turbo reconditioned and everything else cleaned out. Might just look for a clean second hand exhaust though.lol

What about going 2.0tdi instead? I’d like to think the 2.0tdi PD engine should be fairly plug and play.

having never done it and not looking into it it’s all speculation though.

There are too many problem doing this due to having to notify DVLA and proof of work done properly and most of all trying to sort the insurance out. It would esy cheaper and easier to just buy a 2.0.

The caddy blokes seem to go for the ASZ (early 1.9 PD 130hp) when they take the later PD's out. Have a look, there's plenty of information out there on that conversion, and a million rusty mk4 golfs to pull the engine out of.
