Roof Headlining Replacement And Opportunity Moment to install Rear View Mirror DashCam with Rear Camera

Featured Replies

My old Beige headliner sagged down due to the heat, so decided to replace it and re do it in black (along with black trim). It is the ideal moment to install a rear vision mirror mounted dash cam (AU$20) and hide all the wiring down the A pillar and across the roof so avoiding all the airbags etc.

I have 2 options , i either wire in the cam so its on 24/7 recording which isnt a bad thing . Or would most of us have it wired to ignition live switch so it only comes on with ignition ?

Also does anyone know the approx power of one of these cams re battery drain if left on 24/7.

The camera bought (currently out of stock) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/In-Car-Rear-View-Mirror-4-3-Monitor-Dash-Cam-Recorder-Camera-HD-1080P-Dual-lens/173485321513

I still have to put headliner etc all back in subject to how i wire this in.

An interesting mod! Piccies please :)

I've done much additional hunting but can only find the rating for the power supply - 5V@1A or 5W - so for 24hour operation about the same as leaving a single parking lamp lit.  Shouldn't be a problem for a healthy car battery but caution if your battery is getting on a bit.

All dash cams are either mini or micro usb powered so you wouldn’t have a problem changing one if the power drain was too high.

If the wire is running down the A pillar then it will come out at the fuse box on the side of the dash so you’ll have a choice of permanent or switched lives anyway.

I only have the photos as per the post for now as it still has to all go back in.
My battery is LifePo4 shown here after i got rid of the crappy BMM and fitted the BKD 16v engine into the 4x4 https://gyazo.com/3347464e19fdaf30f750bab2ce4e1e52 the box on the side of it is a solar controller as i mounted a 50w solar panel to the roof, the car used to spend months at a time sitting in the secure car park on the mainland.

Yes, that trim is all out atm :)  , though i thought if i wanted to have the camera on 24/7 and the power draw was low enough i could just wire into the permanent live going to the interior lights.
Decisions decisions ...
