Reversing sensors - Replacements

Featured Replies

Hello,
My reversing sensors have been playing up for some time so I've decided it's about time I dealt with the problem.
The car has been in a garage and put on a diagnostic test. The test shows that both the nearside and offiside sensors are not working properly, the two inner sensors appear to be working correctly.

Is possible to buy oem sensors individually or can you recommend a brand.
I'm trying to keep the price down so would prefer not to buy a set of 4 if possible.

Thanks for any info

The original part number is quoted as being 5J0 919 275A - and I've checked and you can find them on ebay.

I bought some new ones for my own car, an Audi S4 to retro fit to the front bumper, they were a different part number but I bought a spray can of Halfords paint primer and a set of spray cans of the correct paint from an online Audi parts supplier, and sprayed them with, in my case primer of a suitable colour, base coat of pearl paint and top lacquer, the end result was as good as the rear original ones in appearance.

There are probably a few other VW Group part numbers that would also be okay to use, but if the correct part number is available on ebay why not buy a couple of them.

Hello rum4mo,
many thanks for the info.

I did have a look on ebay but wasn't certain whether they were copies or originals I was viewing, I'll go back and have another look.

Thanks again

I brought originals as I've had trouble with the cheaper ones failing. Also make sure you get the little white rubber ring that goes around the round end before the sensor clicks in.

Sensor 5J0919275A

Ring 5J0919131

They were about £60 each so all 4 were not cheap, but after too many failures of the cheaper ones, they kept failing in a few months. I decided on originals. Maybe I was just unlucky earlier but the originals never failed.

I simply painted the faces with a brush before fitting and they looked fine once fitted. I also took the opportunity to wrap the push on connections in self amalgamating tape to keep any water out.

Hello aubrey,
thanks so much for your post, very informative.

I had a look online for sensors but there so many different makes in the end I settled on a pair from amazon, still waiting on delivery as they are coming from Germany.

I will update later if they work and and don't fail or do fail.

@aubrey, why did you fit new rings, they should be able to be reused I'd think, strange thing is, Audi provide maybe 3 different colours of rings to help blend in with the paintwork, VW seem to only supply black ones which don't quite blend in with the reflex silver paint on my wife's Polo - white or translucent one have!

@Mikebs, just to let you know how these things are connected to their controller, there is a common supply wire so that wire gets spliced at each sensor, same for the earth return, then each sensor gets its own output wire. The way that your outers only have failed does sound like it is sensor failure as any wiring issues would hopefully cover or include one side only.

All the ones that I bought were new or NOS - but you need to be lucky as to when you look for these items at a good price, I was lucky enough to find a SEAT I think, dealership closing down for one.

Hello rum4mo,
thank you for your post.

The sensor connection tip is most welcome. I'm fairly confident regarding whether the sensors are still working or not as the system was plugged into a diagnostic unit and the results were quite "black and white".

Because I didn't have them on my old sensors. In fact I only saw they were there looking at those exploded parts diagram. I agree if you have then then of course they can just be changed over. Those I brought from Skoda parts were white as in the photo I added. I did always wonder why they were missing on a vehicle I purchased new. They are very cheap to buy though.

Possibly just sloppy production planning on the part of Skoda, I bought 4 when I retro fitted front sensors to my car.
