Interior LED Bulbs - again

Featured Replies

I’ve just replaced my dim original interior bulbs with LED ones, and it was an absolute doddle.  I followed the guide in the Electrical System Workshop Manual (with many thanks to whoever posted that originally!) regarding the removal of the light fittings to access the bulbs, but beforehand, I armed myself with a VW Group wedge tool (just Google VW 3409 Tool) to ensure I could remove the fittings without causing any damage.  The front reading lights are the more difficult ones, though they’re not really difficult at all, and I removed the light fitting, replaced the bulbs and returned the fitting in about 5 minutes.  It took no more than 15 minutes overall to change all 8 bulbs.  The bulbs I used are Osram 2880CW-02B for the Front Reading Lights, Glove Box and Boot (the fixed light on the right-hand side of the boot), and these bulbs have a right way and wrong way of fitting.  If after fitting they don’t light up, simply remove them, turn them through 180 degrees and refit them.  For the Rear Reading Lights and Vanity Mirror Lights, I used Osram 6436CW-01B.  At the time of writing, they’re available on Amazon, and are not at all expensive, around £45 for the lot.  There are cheaper Chinese alternatives, but I felt it was safer to use branded bulbs.  I have to say they’re all a vast improvement on the original bulbs and much more “21st Century”.  For anyone else considering doing this, I'd say it's well worth it.  The interior is a whole lot brighter with these bilbs.

I bought my bulbs from https://www.euspares.co.uk/ and it was only afterwards that I found they are also available on Amazon.  Once the euspares delivery charge is factored in, there's no significant difference in price betwen the two, but if you're an Amazon Prime customer, you'll get them quicker.  i did the fixed boot light, but not the removable light/torch.  All very easy to do, following instructions from the Electrical System Workshop Manual

Just be sure to keep an eye on them. There have been reports of retrofitted LED's not turning off when they should, flickering or consuming power even when not illuminated.

I'm sure the latest LED bulbs are much improved, as will choosing branded bulbs, but it might be worth keeping a close eye on them for unusual behaviour for a few days just to be sure.

Thanks for the tip and I will keep an eye on them for a while.  I've certainly noticed no unusual behaviour so far, but better to be forewarned.

Was there any canbus warning when you fitted these?

thanks

I'm happy to say there were no warnings.

I've also just replaced the reversing light bulbs with Osram 9213CW-02B LED bulbs, which I bought from Amazon for £19.92.  It took about 20 minutes to do, using the Electrical System Workshop Manual, and they are a vast improvement, as well as looking slightly more classy.  Once again, there were, and have been, no dashboard warnings

Rear indicator bulbs next!

Some of the amber LED ones they do now look really smart.

Hopefully, but I prefer to use branded bulbs rather than Chinese imports, and Osram don’t seem to do amber ones.  I’ll keep looking and if I find any, I’ll post again.
