Vrs Tdi DSG

Featured Replies

Not had the car long and still trying to get used to it, there seems to be and part stop on the throttle pedal and then when I press it further the car kicks down straight away and accelerates very quickly, is this in all DSG's or just the new models, there is a very distinct halt to pedal travel and then requires another push to travel the rest of the way.

You are feeling the kickdown switch.

Common on autos from before I was born.

Different manufacturers have different mechanical resistance levels. My Jag's kickdown switch is noticeable but not as firm as VAG's.

My MK3 WILL kick down regardless of the switch, as will most automatics or DSG's, Kick down switches became popular when fuel injection and more recently fly by wire throttle's became the norm, before that a kickdown cable which opened a second throttle butterfly was used (mainly 60's through to late 80's early 90's vehicles.) Mash the throttle to the floor would result in the butterfly opening causing a vacum in the inlet manifold which sensed via tube a tube by the gearbox resulting in the box dropping down a gear or two.

Must say the switches work far quicker and better but i can make my DSG kickdown without using the switch by pressing a bit harder on the throttle pedal.
