Clunking DSG on take off

Featured Replies

Hi, I recently bought a 17 Kodiaq with 26 K on the clock. Love everything about the car (maybe not the size when I need to park it!), but when I take off a little progressively it make a series of loud clunking that you can feel. Is this normal? It's not that I often have to floor it but still. Is it something that I need to worry about because I want to keep it for at least six years. Thanks.

You don’t tell us what model, but there’s no clunking from the DSG in my 1.4 TSI, at gentle or full throttle.   At fuller throttle, you hear the engine roar more, and can therefore notice the change of note at each gear change - but changes are still smooth and there’s no clunking.

@Prsawyer Welcome,

So many Kodiaqs,  petrol, diesel, dsg or manual,  FWD or AWD.  So what have you, and what if you put TC off, does it happen the same?

Its a 2 wd. !.4 TSi. It has 19 inch rims. At first I thought it was the grippy tyres slipping then catching. It will do it about three times from the start. You can actually feel it. It's not the squidgy traction control feeling I used to get in an S Type Jag.

I haven't tried with the TC off, my wife drives it mostly.

Might it be a bad engine or gearbox mount?

My Kodiaq 2.0tsi dsg defo doesn't clunk under any sort of acceleration.

Do the clunks coincide with the gear shifts?

@Prsawyer

So not really 'axle tramp or axle hop', but feels like it.

Slipping / spinning tyres detected and brakes nipped and the banging.

On other models you will be told about 'Dog Bone Mounts' etc

Try the Traction Control off,  try adjusting tyre pressures.

1.4TSI and 2.0 TDI & just so much difference off the line and weight in the front.

Apples & Pears.

It doesn't sound normal.  DSG should be smooth and progressive.  Juddering and clunking are not things it should ordinarily be.

Is the car from a Skoda dealer?  With it's age I would guess there's still some level of warranty remaining.  I would return it to the supplying dealer, for investigation.

@Prsawyer

What are the tyres fitted and are these the originals @26,000 miles?

What pressure are these 19" tyres at?

Get it into the dealers quick, you don't have long on your warranty left.

I took the TC off and the clunkung stopped, which is a relief for me. I have it booked in with the dealer so hopefully its a dodgy sensor.

TC = traction control?
